You realize one drink is enough to put some peope at or near .05 right?

No more glasses of wine at dinner, no more casual beer after work, etc. If you actually correlated how you felt with a BAC of .05 youd realize how absurd that it.

I concur with your reasoning and agree with the NTSB that the maximum BAC for driving should be set below .05.

agreed. it's generally 0.02%~0.05% all around the world.

Germany: 0.05%
Russia: 0%
Ireland: 0.05%
Hungary: 0%
France: 0.05%
Greece: 0.05%
Spain: 0.05%
China: 0.02%
Japan: 0%
South Korea: 0.05%

I don't drink alcohol so I have no built-in sympathy for the cause of drinking and driving.

Again, and this is supported by your own statement, some people are impaired at a BAC of .05. Isn't it socially logical to set a standard for safety at the minimum level of alcohol's effects on anyone who is licensed to drive?

I personally think .08 is fine for now. Im not opposed to lowering it in the future if its warranted but I think it sits at a happy medium ground between cost of enforcement and results, which honestly, would be quite small. Arguments being made for that are being made pointing to the drop between .08 and .10 and expecting the same results and Im not sure I believe that would be the case.

Personally if Im going to drink enough to take me over .08 BAC I plan accordingly. Its really not that hard to be responsible folks. Its really not.

It doesnt make sense to make everything that even remotely impairs you illegal, no.

Not illegal to consume, but definitely illegal to drive while impaired.

I'm all for legalization of drugs and anything else as long as the consumer doesn't affect the safety of others. I won't necessarily partake but it's not my right to tell you that you can't.

It is, however, my right to be unaffected by your choices. If there is a chance that you could be impaired by consuming something, then I wholeheartedly support society's decision to attempt keeping you from driving.

If you have about 10,000 dollars to spend in fines, lawyers etc. its no problem. Also probable loss of job, jail time, mandatory classes or rehab. shite gets deeper.

As far as perception goes, it really depends on how the alcohol affects you. 0.08% doesn't affect everyone the same. You can be above the legal limit and still be completely fine. If you are at the point where it affects your driving, then you are a piece of shite.

This is a dramatically overblown description of what happens to a first time DUI offender.

Depends on what state. Apparently from stories I read on the real OT louisiana doesn't give a frick about DUI, they're practically encouraged. Like I mentioned earlier I got the mandatory minimum for GA and I had fines, lawyer fees (which was a choice of course, but one most people would likely make), jail time, and mandatory classes. The only reason I didn't lose a job is because when I got mine it was at the tail end of an internship, and I already got accepted to a job (they did the background check before it happened). Every job I've ever gotten since has known about it though.
