I agree. Drinking and driving isn't that big of a deal.

We had a breathalyzer in my frat house in college and I'd blow a .08 after just a couple beers in less than an hour.
Yesterday morning I probably would have blown a .08.

Additionally review the history of dui laws. National legal limit used to be .15 though it varied by state.
In 2000 the national legal limit became .08. What was the result?
Zero decrease in alcohol related traffic fatalties, but millions in additional revenue in the system for low level BAC arrests.

The laws are stupid. I did a lot of research into this when the system tried to take a bite out of my arse, which was unjustified IMO.
You're right. They are. I've seen multiple people killed in the last year here alone by people who were still driving after multiple DUIs because they had the cash to get out of it. Because they make the money they do, they'll leave them out of jail to make cash off them. I wish there were harsher penalties that you couldn't buy your way out of.

It is a big deal at higher BAC levels. It is very dangerous at high levels. I don't want to get run into by someone that is smashed. It actually happened to me 10 years ago. Guy was coming at me in my lane, I tried to get to the far right, blew my horn and dude still hit me. Got out of the car, walked up to the dude in his truck. He rolled down the window, was obviously hammered, looked at me a moment then sped off. I was pretty furious.
BUT, the .08 is horseshite. And like I already said, I got a dui that the judge threw out at .07. All due to the way the current system is set up to extort money, not protect.

Like I said, I'm all for harsher penalties at higher BAC levels. And chances are the people you are talking about were killed by someone at one of those higher levels.
But the current system is not set up to differentiate and protect anyone. It is all about maximizing revenues. That is what you should be pissed about.

Does Kentucky not have a three strike law?

I got one in college and got the mandatory minimums for GA:
-48 hours jail time (reduced to 24). Not a holding cell mind you, population where you just wear a jumpsuit with nothing underneath
-$800 fine
-4 months suspended license
-40 hours community service
-20 hour dui class
-victim impact panel
I hired a lawyer who was damn good and aaaaaalmost got it beat but didn't. I was dead to rights, messed some things up when it happened, but I figured I'd at least try or else I'd always wonder if it would have helped.
Eta: increased insurance is/was a bitch too.

I figured mine cost 30k total. I wasn't even driving, but did have keys in my possession and sitting in the car.
Fines, court costs, charged $500 for three days in the halfway house, 15k for a court ordered treatment program and finally lost wages. No telling what the opportunity cost of a DUI is for many people. You can also get one for driving a bike, 4 wheeler, horse (in some places) boat. It doesn't have to be a motorized vehicle in all States. You can also get a DUI for taking prescrip. meds with warning labels and driving.

See, in your case I would say you got what was deserved and may should have gotten a bit more (no offense). You say caught dead to rights and more importantly you said you were driving bad enough to mess things up (#3 in my recommendations).
My issue is with the harsh penalties on the low end of the BAC scale for people that are not driving erratically. That is just horseshite, but it is where most of the money is extorted so that is why it's horseshite.

What in particular did you mess up? Did you admit to drinking?

It is all about the money!
And lost opportunity costs are a HUGE part that often isn't even factored in and why I still say the way current dui laws are written, they may be an overall detriment to society.

Yea I've fricked up once.
Once.
It ruined that whole year for me. Never again.

People that drive drunk are idiots.
While I agree, statistically most adults have done it.
The problem arises because very few people know roughly what their BAC is based on how many drinks they've had, and even those numbers are only estimates and are different for everyone. So unless you just never drive after drinking any amount, you've probably been .08 behind the wheel without even knowing it in hindsight.

Not going to go into details.
I took 3 field sobriety tests and passed all 3. Also took and failed a breathalyzer.
Also, I'm not trying to excuse my actions, I was 100% wrong and know it. It was a mistake that I've learned from.

My problem is with how the limits are set. The vast majority of accidents caused by drunk drivers are people who are twice the legal limit and over. A driver who blows .08 is statistically far more likely to be hit by another drunk driver than they are to cause an accident themselves.
Texting and driving is still legal in many places, and talking on the phone and eating while driving is legal everywhere. All are proven more likely to cause wrecks than a BAC of .08. Even if you get a ticket for texting and driving, its nothing.
The social stigma against DD (largely due to MADD) has skewed the punishment so that it doesnt fit the crime relatively speaking. Driving at the legal limit is much safer than a dozen other things people do while driving. You never see commercials about how someone eating McDonalds killed a family of four.
