Is Birmingham some kind model of "respect" for the country?

Not saying it is or isn't. I'm sure it has it's fair share of the "you need to respect your elders and the law" folk.

But does Birmingham have a really low crime rate or some other objective measure of its virtue beyond religion?

Have you?

When is the last time you spent time in Birmingham and not just drove through? Hoover for the SEC tourney doesn't count unless you did something in actual Birmingham

I will admit it has been 10 years since I spent any time in Bham. It seemed like a depressing worse version of Baton Rouge.

Not currently, nobody pays enough attention to Birmingham now. But what Beck was saying is that Birmingham has the potential to be. Birmingham is most known nationally for the bad things that happened in the civil rights movement. If something happened where the people of Birmingham came together in the public eye like Charleston has then the nation could point to that and say if a city with their past can get a long, why can't we?

The city of Birmingham has a high crime rate, but it's mostly black on black crime in poorer neighborhoods. The suburbs around that make up roughly 80% of the population of the Birmingham metro area how very low crime rates, and most crime there is rich white kids addicted to heroin and pills.

10 years ago was a very depressing place with not much going for it. The last 5 years Birmingham has improved in a huge way. Lots of new construction, businesses. The night life is great for a city our size. Downtown is a great place to be for young people right now and they are moving here in droves.

Good thing Beck hasn't come to East Tennessee. Alot of religion in the air, of course.

But there's also alot of meth making, pain pill popping, moonshine distilling and redneck on redneck crime.

We aren't gonna lead the nation to anything...unless it suddenly develops a hunger for bluegrass music.

There was a 7-8 page thread last week or so here about how Bham has been really growing in the last few years. Especially downtown amongst the younger crowd.

He's saying that this country is headed straight for a cliff the way it's going right now. I agree with that.

My biggest gripe with Beck and many others that follow this narrative is that it's just not fleshed out statistically. Is there a bunch of stupid arse political correctness that is annoying? Yes. Was the shooting in charleston and other mass shootings tragic? Of course. But is violent crime significantly lower than it was twenty years ago? Hell yes!

We aren't worse than we've ever been. Every generation thinks that because humans are narcissistic by nature. It's why we survive, but we aren't worse than we've ever been.
