Listen to yellowhammer.

If you don't like work then don't get real plants.

The less fish you stock, the less work you'll have to do. Rams would get my vote since they look really cool and will be fine in a 55 gallon. Any schooling fish like danios and tetras will be fine.

This link is very helpful when deciding what to get without overloading the tank. LINK

Thanks.

Quick question. Do you have to get the little pebbles? What if you don't get the pebbles for the bottom?

You're gonna want that, that's a place for good bacteria to grow that will eat ammonia and ultimately lead to less work. Google "cycling an aquarium" and that will get you up to speed. Also don't skimp on the filter. The better shite you buy now the less you'll have to fool with it later.

The turtle was a small aquatic and everything we have is super heavy duty in that department. Might actually have to downsize the filter, might suck the damn fish into it.

Thanks for the tip on the pebbles. We have a mural painted on the bottom to look like a creek bed, would love to keep it, but if they need rocks, then they need rocks I guess.

Go spend some time

Here

For fish, I'd buy 2-4 blue gourami, 2-4 Pearl Gourami, Maybe a couple of angel fish, one or two redtail shark, 6-10 zebrafish, a couple of corydoras catfish, maybe a plecostomus catfish. Those should all get along OK. If you like, buy a small school of neon tetras - maybe 20 or green tetras.

I spent a day or two here a while back - day dreaming.

pond post - not aquarium - but so what

Same size aquarium. We had cichlids for several years... good thing about them is at least one of them will never go hungry .

We gave up on them and now have betas and neons and a few frogs plus a plecostomus to help keep it clean. No problems with cannibalism... so far.
