Actually if minimum wage had kept up with the cost of living, it would be about 25 - 30 dollars right now. We live in an age of wage slavery.

I agree. But they are going to jack prices up to make the same profit especially if minimum wage is increased. Increasing minimum wage isn't all sunshine and unicorns.

Back in the late 90s, my sister started working at a locally owned BBQ(fast food type) place,as a server/cashier,It was one of my favorite places to eat.
I was surprised to find out that her starting pay was $12.00 per hour(no bennies of course),turns out, the man paid all of his employees well.
When I would go there, I would see the same people for years and the service was great,as well as the prices.
My sister worked there for 10 years, until she opened her own little restaurant.

Oh its not. I'd prefer we'd remove it entirely and make up the difference in EITC.
I do believe the short terms needs of stockholders overshadow decisions that would long term benefit companies. It's the kind of incentive system for CEOs that lead to overworked, unhappy, underpaided employees and a weaker overall economy. I doubt that's changing anytime soon thoygh.

Gotta call bullshite on this. Looking into historical figures, I don't see a starting point that ends up with $25-30 at present. What year is your baseline?

Minimum wage was never put into place to support a family off of. It is a starting point for an hourly wage and it used to be just kids making it.
99% of the people on minimum wage would get a raise from it within 6 months if they put forth some effort to be better employees instead of begging for tips and expecting handouts. I walked in a McDonald's one day and they had a tip jar next to the register. That is an embarrassment to America that someone ringing up a fast food order thinks they deserve a tip for it.

It sounds good to say fast food jobs should only be entry level jobs for high schoolers, but the fact is the median age for low level fast food workers is 29. So then you have to ask why the median age is so high. One, manufacturing jobs have become more automated, and two, manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas never to return. So you either have to accept they're going to rely on welfare programs to make ends meet, or accept that they have a legitimate gripe for more pay.
Fast food workers who are 29 years old generally don't have any marketable skill or have made themselves unemployable due to criminal record or drug/alcohol abuse.
There are plenty of blue collar jobs available today, but most require training beyond a ninth grade education.

Minimum wage started becoming stagnant relative to inflation when the war on poverty became entrenched. Welfare (all kinds) subsidizes business more than it helps individuals.

well of course they wouldn't start out at the price they think they should be paid people.
Even the burger flippers know that.

and if you want to talk about wages, lets talk about servers who work in non-fast food restaurants and manage to get by

They're too dumb to realize that if they get $15 an hour, the price of their product will raise significantly. If fast food becomes expensive, it's no longer worth it to most consumers and they lose their shitty jobs.
No they will just be replaced by machines. That happens in numerous industries every time the minimum wage is raised...the people on the bottom of the totem pole get laid off and replaced by more efficient machines.
They basically are lobbying to lose their jobs and don't even know it.

Not that I think they "deserve" $15 per hour, but god forbid we show a little compassion to their situation.
If they're making minimum wage, the situation is of their own making.

Technically it's $15 to flip pink slime. I would think that takes a lot more skill and deserves higher pay.

I consider myself a harsh kinda guy, but even I admit that there are some circumstances that are entirely out of one's control.
You know, like a bad economy and no one hiring.

they're probably already making $15/hr with the public assistance they get
U.S. gov't is subsidizing a lot of these mega corps today thru public assistance

Even at many fast food jobs, they start over minimum wage. And they can get a raise within 6-12 months. So if they're a year into minimum wage, they have almost assuredly made some pretty poor choices.

There was a big write up in some national paper like NYT or WSJ that tracked post war cost of living and "entry" wages. Had a graph and everything. Seems like it was about a decade ago and the number then was like 20 - 22 as where minimum wage should have been at the time. Wish I had saved the article as it was pretty interesting.
