A liberal posted this the other day. I assume she was hinting that we should be like Denmark

Denmark also has a population of 5 million mostly similar people in terms of race, culture, and history.

The US, by comparison, has 321 million mostly different people with their own backgrounds and expectations.

But, hey, whatever can be conveniently squeezed down into a meme for the Facebook and Twitter generation.

All that "free" stuff is paid for by taxing them at an income $10,000 lower than that of the U.S.

You mean the government can't offer a ton of welfar programs to make us happy if I don't give them a large portion of that $20 minimum wage? Maybe if our education system was worth a shite, I could wrap my head around such rudimentary logic.

Free University

So, it is free, but you only have 1 good university, 1 decent one, and 3 crappy ones.
1 University of Copenhagen 39
2 Aarhus University 74
3 Technical University of Denmark 101-150
4 University of Southern Denmark 301-400
5 Aalborg University 401-500

yea, I couldn't help but laugh at them. The only thing close to similar between the US and Denmark is that both are countries. Other than that nothing is the same. Even a state here is a bad comparison due to the diversity of states. The picture had a ton of issues

Denmark.

An awesome place, if you like Europe, and cold, and white people.

I like, 'Murica, and seasons, and the melting pot.

Sure, we could do all of that, but there would be some serious problems.

America is America because it's the most perfect state in an imperfect Union. I prefer it that way.

The economy tanks and Denmark gets a new fascist government based on Danish Pride. Then it's all downhill from there.

Yep, we've got tons of issues here, and tons of shite heads, but at least I know if/when the economy tanks we'll still be America, bound by our roots.

Europe is and has always been one step away from anarchy, they've managed to keep themselves from going down the rabbit hole in the last 70 years, because of America.

Whatever Denmark.

It's amazing how the word "free" is tossed about by some people who apparently also think fairies are real.

Shite's easy when you have Big Daddy 'Merica propping up NATO and the defense of the entirety of Western Europe. They can spend them ducats on handouts.

Which kicks in at $55k and is the highest income tax and lowest threshold in the world.

And they pay a 25% sales tax on top of that. Also highest in the world.

I actually like the free university bit, but that will never fly here. At work we have an inordinate number of Puerto Ricans who all went to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez on a full-ride scholastic scholarship. They're all very sharp and we're lucky to have them. The catch is that scholarship has to actually be earned. They all had very good grades in HS and strangely did not commit any felonies. Limiting the scholarships like that in the U.S. would lead to endless race/class arguments. Screw that.

Look into Berea College in Kentucky

School is free
Admis have worked to grow their endowment instead of spending it
Kids have to work while at school

Why this model is not adopted by more schools across the US is beyond me.

Berea College is a liberal arts work college in Berea (south of Lexington), in the U.S. state of Kentucky, founded in 1855. Berea College is distinctive among post-secondary institutions for providing free education to students and for having been the first college in the Southern United States to be coeducational and racially integrated. Berea College charges no tuition; every admitted student is provided the equivalent of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship (currently worth $83,600; $20,900 per year).

Berea offers Bachelor's degrees in 32 majors. It has a full-participation work-study program where students are required to work at least 10 hours per week in campus and service jobs in over 130 departments. Berea's primary service region is Southern Appalachia, but students come from 46 states in the United States and 58 other countries, with approximately one in three students an ethnic minority or international

Part of the big secret to the schools success was taking a humble endowment and growing it to the biggest in the state - Endowment $1.012 billion (2013) - which is also bigger than most schools in the SEC

While I think a truly competitive, free-market style of education would be the BEST option - 100% subsidized college (for those with the appropriate qualifications) would be much less problematic than the current shitstorm that has come about from offering guaranteed federal loans. One can literally see the enormous rise in college cost v wages as soon as the Feds starting giving away money.

Another big boost for Berea students are the alumni of the school. The success rate of Berea graduates is outrageous, especially considering the socio-economic settings from which all of them come.

Simply put, they pay their success forward. Many graduates come back to the school and pick a student to sponsor. While gifts are allowed by the school, they cannot offset any of the obligations a student has to serve the college.

Also, the makeup of the student population is roughly one half European-American and one half African-American. Always has been. Representatives of other ethnicities are included but they're not significant in the enrollment of approximately 1,500.

I agree that more colleges, especially publicly funded institutions, should include some work responsibility for the students. That could radically offset some of the very expensive labor required to run the school and reduce the amount the students would have to pay themselves for their educations.
