He was talking about YOUR understanding not the understanding of Christians around you or your friends understanding.

You cannot understand Christianity this way. You can only pretend to understand it as you have demonstrated.

Of course I disagree. And it's because of examining the issue from many perspectives. Not for a lack of it. Good luck on your journey.

I'm sure you have done you share of searching. We all have. I've been Christian, followed the Tao, followed the Buddha.... there are great things to take away from all of them. Good luck on your journey, too.

By the way, I know people have a tendency to act an arse on internet message boards (myself included). I'm sure you're a good dude and I hope you don't take anything I might have said or implied personally. Next time we have a conversation like this, I hope we can start off with a more... professional (?) approach.

Ask him if you have a serious deficit of understanding of Christianity. Hopefully he can help you there.

Every Christian talking to an atheist would be inclined to say this, so I'm sure he'd agree with you.

That's what every atheist/agnostic says. Pick up a few emotions and turn them over and the answer usually becomes apparent. Just my experience.

What do you mean? If you are proposing some awful experience led me to lose my faith, you're wrong.

I have my understanding, you have yours. That is the nature of literature.

I'm not. But it's rare that decisions for or away from faith are made rationally. They're not rational decisions. They're emotional. That's been denigrated in our hyper-empirical world. But I think wrongly so.

I agree with all of this. I think I might be one of the rare cases though. For me, it took years. Probably 5-7 years to fully process.

Ahh, there it is.

The most amusing and ironic of statements on TD. Those who admittedly base their entire existence on nothing more than faith, are the first to call others the conspiracy theorists.....

Right after they cement their "faith" with the story of a virgin giving birth...to a guy who is murdered and comes back to life.....and spends eternity living in the clouds with his Dad.

I am highly entertained.

Dullards usually are easily entertained. I can send over some pinwheels or bubble wrap if you need some more entertainment.

Not going back through the thread but has anyone discussed tornadoes and Tuscaloosa yet? I mean if you believe God controls the weather then you have to also think he steers tornadoes.

Some people seem to think that in order for there to be a God, no calamity or tragedy can happen anywhere, anytime, ever.

I'm pretty sure Pat Robertson controls the weather to punish people for not hating gays, women, and dark-skinned people. I'm guessing God's going to be pretty pissed when Pat dies and has to explain why he kept blaming God for his own fricked-up beliefs.
