I've had some rewarding seasons for all of my teams if not championships for most.

The one I still regret fandom of is the Rangers.

2010 WS hurt.

2011 kicked me in the balls and didn't call the next morning.

You should probably pick a better team in at least one of those leagues

Then he would be labeled at fair weather fan; which is worse?

I think it is more difficult for younger fans who are teenagers or in their twenties. You tend to associate a championship with something that makes you happy.

If you were not on the team then why does it affect you in any way?

Baseball team at LSU has won six national championships. The next year they lose in a regional and it is firer Manieri. Winning doesn't guarantee long term happiness. It is always about winning today and everyday. Win 6 ? Win 10 or 12 NC's in baseball. Like a drug it is never enough. Self esteem tied into what 18-22 year old kids do on a field or a court.

It's a crazy way to live.

With pro teams yes. With college no. Im a total fair weather fan with the ATL sports teams because they suck so often. Even the Braves have figured out how to frick it up.

Auburn is in my blood. even if they suck, they are my alma mater and thats it.

I think being a fan of teams that don't often have success can help build perspective as a fan. I still can get overly invested in sports if I'm not careful, but like KyleOrton said earlier, I don't let it get to the point where it ruins my week irl anymore (the lone exceptions since I hit adulthood being the aftermath of the 2011 a&m/texas game and game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals. frick you, Ray Allen, you fricking vile chucklefrick). Not proud of how I handled those moments, I can be honest

Now I just use it for what it is: entertainment. Have fun with it. Enjoy it. Ride the highs for all they're worth. Shrug you shoulders at the lows and/or laugh at yourself.

The upside for sports (i.e., comraderie, civic/alma mater pride, etc.) far outstrips the downside in my book.

No. You simply need to realize its not life and death.

I used to have a hard time with losses. I have learned over the years how to remain happy and enjoy the sport even in losses. You will figure it out the older you get. Took me till mid 30's to do it.

As a Houston/A&M fan the only championships I've experienced were when I was 6 and 7 years old and most consider them to have an asterisk since Jordan was playing baseball for most of those two seasons. I've started taking it less serious as I get older but I still watch and care. I take solace knowing that whenever A&M and/or Houston wins a title it will be amazing, whenever it happens. And if I'm still younger I will party my arse for weeks following it
