Technically, you can do this today. A lot of people who don't believe in marriage do it.

You don't have to be married to be in a two parent household.

No you don't. I'm fine lumping those together within the umbrella of this discussion. Two parent households > one. That's worth promoting imo.

People should get to marry whoever the hell they want as far as the government is concerned. If churches don't want to hold a ceremony for a gay couple then that is their business.

Bribing to keep people together in a bad relationship isn't good for children in the long run.

We don't disagree on that. Is this a common problem or a more common problem than let's say the breakdown of the nuclear family in the AA community?

My argument is we get more economic and social benefit by giving tax breaks to married couples than what we pay in. I see our reasonable disagree here and I'm ok with that.

Gov't shouldn't be in the marriage business, imho. That should remain strictly religious events, by whatever denominations see fit. This would not affect legal standings, by cohabitation and legal documents being drawn up for those that wish to be recognized as being legally responsible for one another.

We get into that weird area of what we call things but it really not making any difference. It's not an unreasonable position though.

So the Christian God didn't set rules for marriage that Christians followed?

This is like asking "So Go didnt provide Joseph Smith with golden tablets describing an advanced civilization of North American hebrews?"

Of course he fricking didnt.

The rules for marriage that christians follow were laid out by bronze age jews around 3000 years ago. They have no baring whatsoever on modern society.

Well, the Christian god set a lot of rules that Christians don't follow. Pick and choose, I guess...

None of the Old Testament does for that matter IMO

Then why bother with it? Why is it even studied anymore? What was the purpose of it to begin with if it just doesn't matter...

Of course it doesnt. It's the fable of the origins of a group of people. Fascinating, but should be thought of no more highly than the mythical fables of the origins of the Greeks, the Romans and the native Americans. And we certainly shouldnt be letting it dictate policy.

You'll never be able to marry your true love even if gay marriage is legal.

It mattered until Jesus died on the cross and the new covenant was made. I know you don't believe it. I have a hard time at times myself but you can't hardly make yourself unbelieve something.

Its a part of history, a document that not only shaped the hebrews but ultimately played a huge role in the shaping of western civilization.

It absolutely should be respected and studied as such. That doesnt mean we need to derive any sort of morality or legal precident from it.

Then it hasn't mattered in a very very long time. Churches still preach the parts that they want though...
