It's amazing how much people all of a sudden care about the Arthur Ashe Award now that a transgender is winning it.
The award's credibility had never been brought into question until now.

There were people who complained when Nelson Mandela got it in 2009. When people were actually still watching the ESPYs with consistency.

Not to mention Sam just last year
Spleen put his foot in his mouth there.

Giving Jenner the award is nothing more than ESPN capitalizing on the moment. You can't convince me that Jenner gets the award if he comes out last December. Its like watching the Oscars give Best Picture to a movie that comes out in January, is pure Oscar Bait, and revolves around the most politically relevant theme of the moment.

I wouldn't agree with it but I can see how someone could complain about it. Mandela is not really a sports figure and his legacy is so much broader than just sports.
And I agree with that, as well. I didn't watch the ESPYs that year (rarely do, like I already said), but when most think of Mandela, they think of his impact as a political figure, not anything necessarily to do with athletics.
Jenner is not relevant in sports right now and has not been for quite some time. And his "relevancy" now has nothing to with sports. It's a silly attention-whoring stunt that ESPN is happily buying into because it's a big story.

Yeah, the award should be awarded to those who have a realistic affect on the sports world. Without looking at the past winners, I'd guess there are probably a few exceptions but none as blatant as Jenner. He comes out and then a day later gets a sports courage award? Yeah, that's a big time stunt.
You can debate whether or not Jenner had courage, but if that's the biggest sign of "courage" in the sports world in the past year, then our society is screwed. I'll buy the argument that Sam represented the face of a movement to allow athletes to be open about their sexuality. However I don't buy that Jenner's "courage" is relevant to that many people in the sports world.

Jenner is not transgender. He is a transvestite.

Sort of like Obama winning the Nobel Prize before he was even president.

Yeah as much of a circus as the Sam stuff was, I could see people arguing for a sports impact. Nominally, at least.
Jenner? GTFOH
