To be blunt:
I would put Alabaster, Helena, and Huntsville as a minimum above Auburn. The last time I was in Auburn, it reminded me of a prettier Starkville, but that's about it.
The fact that, while I lived in Newnan, it appeared that people from Auburn had to go to Georgia to do almost everything (work, recreation, etc) seems to indicate that the town itself is a bit of a snoozefest.

Auburn is certainly not an exciting town, but I'd live in Auburn or Newnan (which I'm not a fan of) in a shanty before going to Alabaster.

I think we'd have to agree to disagree then, because I would rather live in Alabaster WAY before living in Auburn. The idea of making 30-45 minute drives to do 50% of anything is tedious. Maybe living in towns as of late that have afforded all these things within easy driving distance (or walking) has soured me on living a bit "off the grid", so to speak.
That said, as much as I love and miss my home state, I wouldn't trade any city there for the town I live in now. I think it's possibly the best town in the South (so to speak - it's in VA), or best town for my tastes.

Where is that? I'll guess Leesburg.

Actually a small-ish town in the Shenandoah Valley, Staunton. (Pronounced Stan-ton)
Great small town, tons of local shops, restaurants, etc. Lots of local color and flavor, and no chain restaurants in the old town where my wife and I like to visit.
Seriously, I would recommend it highly if you like quiet, great food, local theater (the Black Friars Club) and cool little shops. My wife is one of the local artists, and you can see her artwork up in a couple of the smaller stores, and she's been invited to have her artwork in a couple more.
I'm even inviting my father and his girlfriend to come stay in one of the Bed and Breakfasts up here in the Spring.

I've got a condo (@ Portofino) on the beach that we're living in for now because my daughter wanted to go to Gulf Breeze H.S., but our house is in Pensacola. I like the Perdido Pass area because it's usually a little less hectic.
They must have changed something since I went to GBHS. Beach kids were Escambia County and didn't go to GB.
