Meh.

Regardless of your feelings about gluten, wheat, or various fad diets, wheat is a very recent entry into the human diet.

Parts of northern Europe have eaten it for 2000 years or less. That's an eyeblink in evolutionary history.

It saved a lot of people from starvation, but that doesn't mean it is ideal from a nutritional standpoint.

Eating white bread is about the same for your body as eating straight sugar. It isn't healthy. Even"whole grains" aren't that great. If you eat any amount of other vegetables, you're getting better nutrition than you do from wheat products.

While there may be some few people who are sensitive to wheat/gluten, the mania surrounding the issue is insane. The best way to know if you need to avoid gluten is to be tested by your personal physician.

The number of people who actually have celiac disease is a minute fraction of the number of people who claim to have it. I wish people would just man or woman up and admit they're insecure about their weight (like the OP here did) instead of pretending it's an actual medical issue.

I went gluten free because gluten made my penis small.

That's the spirit. Admirable honesty. I'll go next -- I went gluten-free because gluten was turning me into a bronie.

She does the whole probiotic thing, but she was fat for a while (thyroid crapped out) and she couldn't eat it then either. This is not something that's been induced by dieting.

I won't claim to know the truth about your wife's bowel's ( ). Still, it's no coincidence that 3-4 years ago every single diet was Atkins/no-carb and now, low and behold, people are burning up WebMD and claiming their body is kicking back carbs. A balanced diet really is the best strategy for the vast majority of people.

People with a true gluten allergy, called celiac disease, are few and far between. They are pretty pissed about this fad.

Why would they be pissed? This fad has probably brought more gluten-free products to the market, which should be good for people who are allergic to it.

I recall seeing on a documentary some time ago that average human life expectancy actually went down when we developed agriculture, stopped being wandering hunter/gatherers and settled down into communities. The reason given for that was that our diet changed from mostly meat and wild vegetation to mostly (or at least more) grain/bread, which was less nutritious. Increase in disease from concentration of population and the presence of vermin was also said to be a factor, but not as much as the change in diet.

So are a multitude of other foods such as corn, potatoes and tomatoes. Wheat is especially popular in modern diets because it's a ready cheap source of carbohydrates.

Carbs are easily digested and are put to use by the body quickly. Protein, on the other hand, takes time to be digested. It delays hunger longer than carbs for this reason.

A diet higher in protein and fiber than carbs and fat will keep a person at a healthy weight with much less effort than one dominated by carbs.

Whole wheat is an excellent source of insoluble fiber. Fiber is, of course, "nature's broom."

This guy knows what he's talking about.

I have bigger issues with the modified beyond recognition corn that is in almost everything. It's garbage.

Stay away from fads and "diets", don't indulge on fatty meats just because it's gluten free and you think it's all good, and overall it is very simple. BURN MORE THAN YOU CONSUME. Doh.

You gotta exercise.

Most people that fail do so BC they start out full steam ahead and try all or nothing from the get go. It's about phases and progress.

I didn't say they were rioting in the streets, but the person I know with celiac has dealt with it since he was a baby. The symptoms are dibilitating, and it's not something you just discover one day and claim to have like so many hipsters and soccer moms are nowadays. It would be akin to someone with a life-threatening peanut allergy sitting across the table from someone else claiming to have the same thing when in reality their farts just smell kinda bad after they eat a snickers.

The only thing negatively impacting celiacs is the over-reaction of some people who, for whatever reason, CARE that other people have decided to be gluten-free or grain-free.

There's a culture of ridiculing "gluten-free" eating for whatever reason. That leads to people who are genuine celiacs being ridiculed.

The upside is that every restaurant in the land has now heard the term "gluten-free", and that should help celiacs. The downside is the people who don't find any benefit of going gluten-free deciding that it is a term worthy of derision.

Do what you want. Let others do what they want. Its not that hard.

If you had a legit, serious disease, and then the rest of the country pretended they had it to fall in with some hipster fad, wouldn't you be a bit miffed?

I guess if you want to feel victimized about a disease. I personally would welcome the influx of new abundant products.

exactly. i know me well enough to know that i'm never gonna be the guy that eats brown rice and baked chicken 6 days a week. i like corn. i love beef. i eat it in moderation and mix my diet up. my diet is probably.. 80% clean but i stick with it year round becuase it's easy and i stay in the gym.

where you get in trouble is "oh no you ate white rice, you might as well be eating a candy bar you're a failure"

It does you no good to limit your intake. Cut it out completely or don't do it at all. I don't mean that as an "all or nothing" attitude works best. I mean that gluten will stay in your system and won't help you

I eat two cups of Greek yogurt with berries a day. It's one of those healthy foods I actually look forward to eating. Thank goodness for Costco's Kirkland brand... $6.50 for two quarts.
