And a lot of people take drugs because it's easier than actually changing their lifestyle.

Compensatory damages for non-violent crimes is the only logical thing, in my book. That or make the penalties so harsh that it is an extreme deterrent (see Singapore).

Very true. I'm still amazed at how many still believe in this magic pill.

The big pharma argument is interesting to me because both sides have decent points and we have certainly seen an increase in QoL and prolonged life because of some medications. On the other hand, lives have been ruined and money has been raked in because of it.

I think it mostly comes down to personal responsibility of the patient and professional responsibility of the medical professional.

Sometimes it is, but either way I'm not giving out sympathy for anyone killed committing a crime.

This makes the most sense. I saw a while back where those Australians were executed in Indonesia for trying to import heroin. That is crazy to me to kill fools over heroin. But, it seems to work in those southeast asian countries.

Big pharma isn't killing anyone. We love drugs, it's easier to take a pill than exercise, eat right, get therapy/counseling, stop smoking....

ISIS has to kill off the Jewish nation first, then they will be here. I'm more worried about them than cows.

ISIS is largely fake.

And what is actually there is a creation of western intelligence agencies.

I'd be more worried about what the psychopaths that run this country, and others, will do next.

Other than opiate junkies, and other than some freak side effect, can you give me an example?

Do you have any earthly idea how difficult it is to get a drug through the FDA?

And once it is through the FDA, do you have any earthly idea how difficult it is to get doctors on board to start prescribing it?

And once it is accepted and regularly prescribed, do you have any earthly idea how long it takes for the pharma to make back all the money it took to develop the drug, test the drug, go through fda, then sell the drug?

And once they've made their overall investment back, do you have any earthly idea how little time they have to actually make profit on the drug before our laws allow generics to hit the market?

Back to my first question... can you give me an example of "lives have been ruined and money has been raked in because of it" that doesn't involve opiates or random side effects?

Really? Good to know. Tell that to Christians and Jews in the middle east. They are being killed, raped and tortured daily.

Christians are actually allowed to live and mind their own business as long as they pay a Christian tax.

I know that sounds like I just made it up, but it's actually true, in the ISIS brand of Islam.

Sure. I have someone very close to me that probably takes 10-15 pills a day for various ailments. They take a pills to go to sleep, wake up, and to generally control bodily functions. It seems like every pill was the result of a previous pill being prescribed. This all started with one health issue over 10 years and has burgeoned into a lot of issues now. The worst part (to me), is seeing how memory and mental acuity has declined so much. All these drugs are necessary to live life for this person now because the body has become so dependent.

A more generic answer too...many people struggle with benzos or other drugs. It isn't just opiates anymore. But I'm sure you have some knowledge of this as it has seemed to hit close to home for you.

I've been to several dinner/drink events with a sales rep pushing their company's mesh for surgery...so, it isn't all that difficult imo.

If a company buys up all the rights and patents, then they wouldn't be losing money on generics, right?

This is both an oversimplification and also incorrect.

Yeah, I probably should've left that part out and let you or the other guy explain how that works. I'm sure y'all are working against a stacked deck.

Obama alter, because this isn't true at all. It's part of the propaganda, but go on ahead and believe it if it makes you sleep better.

Militants from the Islamic State destroyed a temple in the ancient ruins of Palmyra in Syria, activists and government officials said on Sunday, continuing a pattern of destruction that they have visited upon historical sites across the territory they control there and in Iraq. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist and monitoring group based in Britain, said Sunday in a statement that Islamic State fighters detonated “a large quantity of explosives” that they had arranged around the Temple of Baalshamin, one of the most grand and well-preserved structures in the sprawling complex of ruins. A government official told reporters that it was heavily damaged by the blast. The temple stood “dozens of meters” away from a Roman amphitheater where the Islamic State held a mass execution, killing 25 prisoners, in a video released last month, the activist group said. The entire ancient city of Palmyra is a Unesco World Heritage site. Maamoun Abdul-Karim, the head of Syria’s Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, confirmed the activists’ account to Reuters, although the two accounts differed on when the temple was destroyed. The Syrian Observatory said the destruction took place last month, while Dr. Abdul-Karim said the militants bombed it on Sunday

I don't do that anymore, I'm on a different side. But for surgical stuff, you could lose a contract and $5M of revenue in a day and it's not coming back. On the pharmaceutical side, you could get a stray script here or there, but major changes are hard fought and are won through demonstrated safety profile first, improved efficacy second and competitive pricing/managed care coverage.
