I need to start listening to that little voice in my head that says "don't click that thread, Tbird. Nothing good will come of it."
That little voice knows wassup.

After having a run in with a water moccasin in Swamp Lejeune back in the 90's I have lived with the mantra of "the only good snake is a dead snake".
I've got some good military venomous snake stories myself ... from Central America to swamps in Florida and Georgia to mountains in California and even to creeks at Fort Bragg. Not counting the ones as a kid growing up on a farm not far from here ... and not counting the yearly ones we experience on our farm here where I am sitting now.
I respect them, and I usually try to relocate them. We keep a Tomahawk snake stick by the back door for just that reason (a stick with a gripper on the end basically).
I've turned over our jon boat at the big pond and had a dozen or more cotton mouths and various moccasins underneath. I've crawled under the house and had a copperhead hanging in the joists right over my head. I've yanked vines outta the pecan trees and had a whole nest of baby copperheads fall on me ... and, (knock on wood) have never been bitten.
I was cleaning around the garden the other day and flipped over a clay pot tray not thinking about it and there was a nice sized cotton mouth ... I picked him up and put him in a bucket and took him way back in the woods and thanked him for not biting me.
They've always cut me some slack ... so I always try to cut them some slack. And they eat a lot of mice around the chicken houses and the barns.
But you gotta watch where you reach, be careful about where you walk.
Based upon what those guys are wearing I'd say it was just cold enough that the snakes were chillin' ... but they are in nasty moods this time of year when they are in their breeding cycle.

I was tidying up the edge of a natural spring pond, removing brush and some aquatic plants. I had my puncture proof boots on and a kaiser blade in hand. I pulled a deep rooted water trumpet, or something like that, and out came a nest of little cottonmouth babies squirming and slithering everywhere. When they're babies, they have red eyes and neon green tail tips. I got the blade and parted the closest one in two, then they all started curling up and lashing out. I got the kaiser blade and started flinging them into the water, hoping I would see a big bass have a go at one. The pond was stocked, but nothing happened. They all dispersed and found new homes, and I left.

I've never killed a rattlesnake I didn't eat. Ive let plenty of small ones go I just don't see the need to kill one for the hell of it.

I picked up a Kaiser Blade that was sittin' there by the screen door. Some folks call it a Sling Blade, I call it a Kaiser Blade. It's kindly a wood handle, kind of like an axe handle. With a long blade on it shaped kinda like a bananer. Mhm. Sharp on one edge, and dull on the other. Mhm. It's what the highway boys use to cut down weeds and whatnot.

One of these actually kills millions of humans
The other two kill the things that kill millions of humans
Grow up you bunch of Nancy's!
Snakes eat rodents who carry plague
Spiders eat mosquitos who carry malaria

Would have let them live. They were no danger to anyone.

Neither have I ... they make excellent stew.
I've actually got a couple of rattlesnake skins rolled up in baggies in the freezer that I have yet to decide what to do with them ... I've made hat bands and pistol grips in the past ... but not sure what I am going to do with these two yet.
