Concerned.

It was a tale of two halves. In the first, Missouri concentrated almost exclusively on the pass and, for the most part, had their way. Lots of playmaking potential on display from Drew Lock to the young wideouts. And aside from the ill-advised Mauk heavo-ho, MM looked in OOC form.

The side-by-side eye comparison with Lock and Mauk was startling. Lock's accuracy and ability to hit a receiver in stride is special. If they can adequately recruit offensive lineman and running backs around Lock, the next few years could be the Golden Age within the Golden Age of Gary Pinkel's coaching career.

Onto the second half... They looked determined to establish the run and failed miserably. As feared, there's no running game behind Hansborough. Witter's truncated given name is appropriate, Ish. What we saw in 2014 remains - he's too small with no power. It's too soon to pass judgement on the other reserves, but with RH graduating this spring the fear extends to 2016.

The offensive line obviously needs work. I won't pretend to know the Xs and Os of it, but to average less than 3.0 YPC against a blood donor is concerning. As were some of the QB pressures allowed with simple DL line stunts.

Defensively they looked outstanding, especially given the youth and inexperience of the defensive line. I don't recall the front four making a sack but they generated tons of pressure, so it was a nice start. It was interesting to see the new wrinkles Barry Odom brought to the defense. They're probably going to need them once the conference schedule commences.

Overall a nice debut. Hopefully they can whip that Arky State arse like USC did next week.

Pretty much thought the same as very one else on here.

Impressed With:
Lock(Holy crap the accuracy!)
D-Line U
Penton on D

Meh
Mauk(Looked about the same to me. He did stay in the pocket longer when allowed to.)

Disappointed With:
RB Depth
O-Line (I doubt we've seen their final form)
Kick return (needs a lot of work)

Hopefully this team is as determined to get better week after week like last year. Solid performace overall.

My only problem with the offense is that they didnt physically dominate a DL that they should have regardless of everything else. That running game is going to be an issues I think down the road. I hope I am wrong.

All this. This was a SEMO defensive line we're talking about. Our OLine should have been pushing them around anywhere they wanted to all day long. Instead, it was just the opposite for much of the game.

I like Ish as a third down back. On the TD to Moore he made a key block, also did the same o. The TD that Moore dropped.

He's probably the best of the backs at pass protection. He's just not a lead back at this point.

Ya know. Some good points made about Mauk on both sides. If those two TD passes are caught (and they were pretty well thrown balls), it would put a different look on his performance. My bigger problem with Mauk is there are just too many series that do absolutely nothing. We need to be able to give the D a breather. That's what absolutely killed us in the Georgia game last year. Nearly every series was a 3 and out or a turnover. The D was constantly on the field and it caught up to them.

Agreed, reedus. While I'm excited about Lock, this is Mauk's team right now and it should be. Mauk has the experience, and that will be critical as the competition improves. Lock is the future, but we need Mauk to play well. We have very young receivers who made some mistakes and will continue to do so. Their drops made Mauk look worse, and while admittedly his performance wasn't great, it did the job.

I also believe having Hans and Boehm go down early screwed us up. Obviously, Hans is the biggest part of the running game. And losing Boehm's experience and leadership on the OL hurt. I don't think the loss there can be underestimated. Hope they're both ready to go for next week's game.

Sam Bailey, one of those Missouri 2*'s recruited on the OLine had 1 TFL in the game. Have they moved him to the defensive side? Anyone hear or see this? I know I've been watching and waiting for him to put on weight as an OLineman, but at 265 maybe they decided to put him on the other side of the line on an end? I dunno.

This game really showed the margin of error when it comes to perception.

Moore dropped a TD, couple plays later int. +7 points

Brown dropped a TD led to a FG. +4 points.

Reese drops an easy one that kills a 2 minute drive.

Couple plays that receivers didn't finish or ran routes wrong.

All those add up to Mizzou putting up 45-50 points. And they can all be corrected as the season progresses.

The good news is Boehm seemed to be on the sideline cheerleading for everyone with no apparent grimacing while doing it.

Brothers is a machine. Think he had 16 tackles and a blocked punt. Run defense is very stout. Only problem with the defense all day was our DEs losing contain a few times but that is fixable. Really encouraged by the defense. Looked good and should get better.

On offense. Very concerned about the RBs behind Hansbrough. There is no excuse to have this many scholarship RBs and not have one decent one behind RH. OL was shite. That's very discouraging. Too much experience up there to have that bad of a day. Have to fix it. I've never seen a RB get creamed as consistently as Witter. It's kind of impressive how he manages to get smashed 6-7 times a game.

Mauk wasn't bad. Made a few bad decisions, but overall he played decent. I like our athletes at WR. They just have to he those drops under control. Both Moore and Brown dropped a TD pass, but they caught one as well. Lock looked great. Throws a very accurate ball, and great field vision.

Special teams. Baggett was solid. Fatoney punted well. The return teams were a mess. Penton had a really bad day returning punts.

I'm not trying to be an alarmist because overall I was pretty damn happy with the WR's and the game overall, but just to further the conversation...Moore has always had an issue catching the ball. He can make some spectacular catches but he also has a history of dropping balls that should have been caught. I hope he does improve that because he can be real good, but he this is his 3rd year now that he has had to correct that. Not sure if it will be fixed as the season goes on or not when it comes to him.

Exactly wubilli. Sleeping on it, and under the influence of coffee instead of what I drank last night, this is the proper viewpoint. Still doesn't fix the RB or OL situation, but I think those will work themselves out too.

Brothers was a beast. Scherer disappeared. They'll fix Harris and our ends. Dbacks overall played well as well.

I think if it had been a big game, and Pinkel felt he needed them, they might both have returned.

One thing about this years receivers is that there are a lot of them. If Moore is going to struggle catching the ball he can be sat on the bench. Dilosa, Blair, & Hall should push him.

It seems like Dilosa is go to be the receiver we through the screens to.

I was glad to see all the young receivers get reps yesterday. Some of them will step up and separate themselves from the pack. Dilosa, Hall, maybe Smith if they burn his shirt.

My take is this was the typical first game under Pinkel. Nothing but basic, vanilla, predictable stuff. Seems I have to point this out every year after the first game against a cupcake.

Lots and lots and lots of athleticism and potential everywhere on this team, more so than any roster I can remember under GP. This will be a dangerous team by the end of the year, and if they avoid a midseason lull they can compete for/win the east again.

DlineZou plays on.

Major concern - rushing game. Less than a 100 yds. against a FCS! Should I just stop there? OL was beat by a FCS team. This morning in Cape, SEMO coaches are giddy about their DL handling mighty Mizzou's OL. Hell, I have a red face. Ricker has a job and he better do it now.

LB's - they are awesome. D will carry the O again this year.

Special teams - there's promise but there is more work to do.

I will never forget how the 2013 improved every game. So, there is hope. GET with it OL!

Hansbrough played 3 plays. He will be able to make up for some of the OL issues. And similar to last year I expect the OL to be descent. That the position where other than Boehm Mizzou has rarely gotten high end recruits.

Extremely Concerned

The fact of the matter is this was a sub par FCS team and we are pretty much making excuses for why we did not blow them out by 50.

Defense played their part. I think Barry Odom will end up being recognized as the best DC in the SEC this year.

We are an SEC team, with SEC players at the line of scrimmage and we also consider ourselves in the top tier of the conference. We should have displayed our physical will against that team in the trenches. 3 and outs against this team with our 1's in the 3rd and beginning of the 4th quarter, really? We are really excusing that BS?

Whatever coach or player talk that comes from the locker room whether that was the Boehm/Hansbrough injury, the inexperience, or the lack of focus should not be used to excuse what we say from an O line perspective on saturday.

Pinkel is not in the top 5 in SEC salaries with getting paid 4 million dollars to be average. If we are going to continue to schedule the way we schedule then we should put up the numbers to justify our superiority and our standing in the conference. Perception matters.
