Rising will start - Napier will have the team believing that.

And frankly, the pressure is on Utah - they have a very tough schedule to start the year, with very high expectations.

Their team is good enough to make it to the CFP.

No the O- line will not be as good as last year.
Lost too many starters.

So I disagree completely. Mertz didn't play well with a much better o-line at Wisky. Now like I said he will have much more talent at speed at WR. Then he ever had at Wisky. But a Average to below average O-line with a QB that has never shown Consistency. In 3 years as a starter.

Will find out in a little over 2 weeks.

I hope I'm wrong but until Mertz proves he is not the same QB he has been for the last 3 years then I have to believe that is what he will be.

Other than QB, we are better at almost every position up and down the roster.

Def don’t think our starters are better across the board. We lost 2 starting linebackers to the draft. OL is at best the same after losing Torrence. We have talent but still have a lot of unproven players.

We are not as athletic at QB

Didnt know that was a requirement. Our best QBs ever couldnt run out of sight in a day

not sure why everyone thinks Mertz is Going to come in and throw Dimes all over the field

Thats literally what he's done all offseason to gain respect of coaches and players

apparently no one watched any of his games at Wisky.

You mean games vs teams like Michigan with Wisc wrs who went undrafted? Supporting cast matters, look at LSU Qb from AZ, had 10 tds / 10 ints then came to the SEC with real talent around him and beat Bama

Other than O'Cyrus' spot we upgraded across the board.

Reading today the Utah has lost their backup to Rising due to injury.

The players we lost on the O-line other than O'Cyrus were soft. O line will be better this year if they stay healthy.

Utah seems convinced they have a D line this year that can keep our running game in check. I think they might be a little over confident. I am hoping our D line/front 7 can hold up in the 2nd half though because that new starting RB of theirs was running safeties over when he got loose their last few games last season. And then Coach Napier making the comments that our secondary has to improve their tackling after the scrimmage.

Utah will be throwing either a 3rd string or an injured QB at us. Our defense with the new DC's tendency to blitz early and often should expose this weakness and cause multiple turnovers. I predict that we get 4 turnovers and win by 10.

I am not expecting a whole lot out of Mertz and the passing game this season. The few times people got to see the team running plays in practice they claimed the offensive line was getting blown up quite a few times. They also claimed George looks like he could be a liability when we play teams that have a good pass rushing DE. Not sure how good Utah's DEs are at rushing the QB though. When playing good SEC defenses I fully expect to see some plays that look like that mess we saw in the spring game.

I expect his stats to be better than Richardson's. If they are we will win more games. Remember, Richardson personally cost us at least 3 games last year.

Teams had to account for his running ability though which helped our RB rushing game some. I highly doubt Mertz gives us 265 yards a game total. Just looking at this one matchup with Utah I was watching the 2022 highlights and most of our nice RB plays happened because the Utah LBs were so worried about Richardson taking off they kept pinning themselves out of position in the middle allowing our RBs to get nice runs to the outside. Teams adjusted better to Richardson after that Utah game but it totally changed how Utah did things.

Utah QB highlights...

Seeming more likely as we approach the game this former walk-on QB may actually get the start against us. This is a highlight tape obviously and doesn't show his weaknesses. It looks like he is just as much a running threat as Rising was but I took a look at the 2nd half of that Penn State game when he replaced Rising and he was mostly a deer in the headlights when they got good pressure on him. He made a lot of poor throws or just froze up. He seems to be a decent passer without much pressure but most QBs are when its easy like that.

He did.

He also won the Utah game.

And he kept us in it against Aggy when the defense was shitting the bed in the first half.

Looking back at last year this weekend, I noticed that Richardson at times was better in some games than I gave him credit for, but even when he was playing well, he would make the big mistake that ultimately cost us the chance to win.
Other games he just played poorly the whole game. Overall I still contend that he cost us 3 games due to poor play and unforced errors.

Richardson definitely helped win us the Utah game with the big plays he made and how he opened things up for a few nice RB gains.

He also set us up with the win @ Texas A@M with a pretty good game passing/rushing taking control in the 2nd half. He had a big passing game against Tennessee but the defense was trash that game and we came up short.

The games I think we may have won with a joe blow pedestrian QB back there instead of Richardson is Vanderbilt and Kentucky possibly.

I think people are going to be surprised if they are thinking Mertz is some big upgrade over Richardson. My guess is we go 6-6 again or 7-5 even if the defense has a lot better numbers this season.

If the defense isn't any better. It may be a 4-8 season. This defense has to improve especially in the defense backfield. Or it will be a very long and very dreadful season

I won't be surprised at all if Mertz has better stats than Richardson. Richardson was as much a liability as he was an asset. Consistent play by Mertz will be an improvement.

I am excited about the season, Go Gators!

Richardson was like an MLB hitter with a a .250-.275 BA, high strike out rate, but hit 30+ HR's.
