JC:

South Carolina running backs coach Bobby Bentley reached out to Florida commit and Mauldin native Dre Massey (JUCO) today to express the Gamecocks interest in him taking a visit.

Massey said he is leaning toward not visiting South Carolina and appears all set with the Gators.

The previous Gamecocks staff wasn't "sold" on Massey at wide receiver and South Carolina fell behind in his recruitment significantly during the latter stages of their tenure.

I think McIlwain comes to SC, but if he goes MLB with a $3.5M+ signing bonus, I would never hold it against him.

Gamecocks offered 3* WR Kiel Pollard who is an Arkansas Commit at the moment.

He plans to visit South Carolina officially (likely in the month of January).

Gamecocks running backs coach Bobby Bentley was by the school today and offered him after watching practice.

Muschamp also got in touch with Nick McCloud today, here's McClouds comments:

quote:

"(Muschamp) told me he loved what I put out there on tape," McCloud said. "He told me he would be watching me play Saturday (in the Class AAA state title game vs. Midland Valley at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia) and would be in close contact."

"I've always pulled for Florida," he said. "And I liked him when he was the coach there."

I watched 3* RB CJ Freeman's Sr Highlights. At the end of it I thought to myself, "Cory Boyd.'

https://www.hudl.com/athlete/2623075/highlights/317146376/v2

He was a 4* RB, then he got hurt, we wanted to see how he recouped and we slow played him, but then we took his commitment when we saw him in Spring camp. He did heal up well and played well this year.

His knee held up too. He had 292 carries this year and 2091 yards, 7.2 ypc, and 23 TD's. His stats fell off a little from last year and here's what I noticed in his film.

I think he lost some speed from the previous year and a little of his elusiveness/agility. He is still fast and agile, but he's not AJ Turner fast/agile. He runs with some power and makes the first guy miss a lot. He runs with his shoulders square. He has a nice stutter step to juke and change direction, good footwork. He has both hands on the ball when he's approaching and running through the line. He switches the ball to his outside arm when he's breaking loose. Technique wise, I saw him do a lot of things the right way. He has some swagger to him. After lowering the shoulder he'll let the defender know. He falls forward well and he's patient with his OL (I was actually pretty impressed with his OL, they hustled down field to block, that was a good HS OL.)

Overall I like him as a player. He reminds me of Cory Boyd a lot. Not the biggest RB, not the fastest/agile RB, but just a solid overall RB. Coincidently, Wisc really wanted Cory Boyd too, he almost went there. I can see why Wisc wants him too. Also, knowing that Wisc offered lets me know his academics are in order. Wisc's admission office is a bunch of dicks. I think he rehab's well from his injury, he put in the work to get better and back in shape. That tells me something about his character and work ethic. He's a RB who's in b/w what Denson and Turner are. Smaller/Faster/Quicker than Denson, bigger/slower than Turner. I think Sands was so high on him b/c he really did look technically sound.

3* DE/DT Kier Thomas just got a CB to SC. Apparently Muschamp and TRob flew down to Miami Dade to see Thomas after the McIlwain visit. Thomas has 28 TFL's and 20 Sacks this season (big time stats for a 6A school in Dade County) and was a heavy auburn lean until recently. TRob and MUSChamp were his primary recruiters at auburn.

He's up for Dade County POY. If he gets that, he'll get a significant bump in the ratings.

Kier's Sr season highlights were extremely impressive and considering the teams he was playing against. Norland, Killian, First Coact Booker T Washington, they played a legit schedule.
https://www.hudl.com/athlete/3831998/highlights/280674385/v2

Here's what I saw. He reads the count really well. He was often the first guy to move on the DL and explodes through the OL. He has a very fast first step. He's 6'3" but I think he has the wingspan of a 6'8" guy. He's strong, he gets a good push, he blew up some OL, put them on their buts and then sacked the QB. He plays assignments well. He would watch the RB in the flats and make a play. The INT play around the 3:50 mark was great, he didn't make the INT, but it was everything he did to cause it, and after it that was impressive. He is just very disruptive, a real play maker. I really hope we get this guy, he's very underrated.

McIlwain's comments to Muschamp/Roper/Robinson visit:
quote:

“The visit went really well,” McIlwain said. “It was nice to talk to them, hear their plans and how confident they are about the program. I liked all the coaches; they seem extremely good at what they do and I’m really excited about it.”

“They are going to run a spread, do a lot of one-back situations and go fast,” McIlwain said. “They want to score a lot of points, and they want a quarterback who can do a lot of run-pass options and make big plays. They want someone who can use their feet to extend plays and in the spread offense, the way they run it, that’s extremely important.”

“I had a great relationship with Coach Mangus and was sad to see him go,” McIlwain said. “But I love Coach Roper as well. I had a great relationship with him at Florida and they were one of my top schools. I built a great relationship with him. He’s a great coach, great teacher of the game and I can see myself excelling under him as a coach.”

“This weekend will be a good weekend to get a lot of information and figure out exactly what I want to do,” McIlwain said. “Once I have all the information I need, I’ll make everything completely official.”

“I’ve talked to Coach Holbrook a couple times,” McIlwain said. “I plan to play both sports. It’s an amazing opportunity. I’m still looking at the MLB and it’s extremely intriguing. It’s something I’m getting all the information about and learning about.”

Not sure how I feel about him playing both. Idk the kid is clearly an amazing student athlete, I guess if anyone could do it, he could. Reminds me a bit of Russel Wilson to be perfectly frank. Wilson played baseball and football at NCST until graduating and going to Wisconsin.

Apparently McIlwain's mom is not thrilled that there's a plan B, shame we're covering our basis, right?

This seems so pompous to me. Why would anybody not have a plan B or even a plan C? Does he and his family not have a plan B if he takes a high fast ball to the dome and the lights go out? Does he not have a plan B if MLB and this college or that college fall through?
This is a big time business decision for all parties involved it would be simply ignorant for any side not to have a plan B.

I really do hope Mrs. Mcllwain googles and reads all this stuff. If she does, I hope she understands that as a Gamecock fan I truly hope to watch her son play in garnet and black, but if our staff doesn't have a couple alternative plans in place in case a teenager changes his mind.... then we have hired the wrong staff.

We just offered another Elite 11 QB this morning, maryland commit 4* Dwayne Haskins.
https://247sports.com/Player/Dwayne-Haskins-54144

We are putting backup plans in place in case McIlwain goes MLB. Haskins grew up a Maryland fan and Mike Locksley is there so that will be hard to beat. However, he's probably the most realistic shot of anyone to flip of the Elite 11 QB's.

Social media journalism is getting out of hand. Who wants to be James Franklin called this ESPN guy and told him this?
