Sumlin is getting an extension. He got it when his wife put a racist letter in their mailbox.

You should put them on your OOC schedule instead of Nicholls, New Mexico, and Louisiana.

Laughing at Iowa State? Sagarin and S&P have them as the second toughest team on your schedule so far.

I don't think he will work at A&M but it will be hard to fire him is he keeps winning .

All it takes for Sumlin's season to go South is an injury or two on defense. The defensive depth is once again, garbage. And will always be garbage, because Sumlin doesn't understand that defense is necessary in this league
He figures that out, I have no problem with him staying. But look at the 2018 class, and get back with me. It isn't going to get better any time soon with Sumlin. Too bad, because he actually has some decent defensive coaches trying to make something out of dogshit they have been handed
He has some defensive talent on the roster, but it is simply not enough. It is why he will never be more than mediocre in this league

I can potbang on Sumlin with the best of them, but it should still be pointed out that A&M and Texas have historically been able to recruit ~90% of their players from Texas and have been fine with it. I remember one team under Slocum that only had 1 player NOT from Texas, and that team went something like 11-1. Texas always had all the talent you needed, and picking up players from out of state was gravy.
You can't do that anymore. For several reason (not the least of which is the spread offense), Texas just does not produce elite LB's anymore. You have to go somewhere else, and we don't seem to be doing that.
Look at the ESPN player rankings for the 2018 class.
LB's ranked: 135
AL, FL, & GA: 46
TX: 13
3 states in the heart of the SEC that have less than 1.5 times the population of Texas have more than 3.5 times the number of ranked LB's.
Sumlin has to get better at recruiting LB's from places other than Texas.

I think we need to keep him. An SEC heading coaching gig no longer has the shine that it used to. Last year, one of the better programs in the conference had to resort to hiring within after striking out on a number of top candidates.

Whatever. I'll be happy when he's gone. Mediocre coach, and we can do better
I've said this, too, but then I can't answer when someone asks who I would go after.
If he and his staff would just continue to work like it SEEMS they have in the past several weeks, and learn in the process, I am OK to keep him.
If he continues to just put his head in his arse and we have games where EVERYBODY else sees the problem, but coaches continue to shite the bed, then I am not OK with it. UCLA was the latest, and one of the most egregious, but when he let McKinney and Spav drive an elite offense straight into the ditch game after game, you just can't excuse that.
Defense is a harder thing to fix. An innovative offense with a couple of playmakers (JFF, etc.) can turn things around in a hurry. Defenses don't work that way. Chavis may or may not be the answer, but there was a lot more to do when he showed up.
On offense, there have just been too many times where he went Nero on us. (The burning Rome reference, not Star Trek.)

Any coach that understands that defensive depth is important would be an improvement. Elite talent on the defensive side of the ball is key. It's easy to scheme out a decent offense with subpar talent - look at numerous CFB teams that do so.
Not so easy to do on defense. Talent rules all
I'd go after a great recruiter that understands this concept. There are several that would be attainable. Look at the 2018 recruiting class for A&M, and Sumlin STILL doesn't get this basic concept
