Don Shula was very outspoken...

...and the Saban/Dolphins narrative only made Don even more bitter and outspoken.

I don't think there has ever been a less popular QB at Bama than him. The players mentioned above, I think there is one photo of them in the Bryant museum but basically those teams didn't even exist.

This is pure bullshite. Shula led the drive that resulted in The Kick to beat Auburn, plus the drive at the end of the game to beat Georgia at the beginning of that year. Lots of Bama fans liked Shula as a QB. Those teams "didn't exist"? Are you fricking kidding us? Never been to a game at BDS, have you?

All of this.

Also, don't forget the pass to Albert Bell in the 4th quarter that beat Ohio State to open the 1986 season.

Even many fans that hated Shula as a coach still love him for his time at QB.

Shula was reasonably popular as a QB and yes he engineered one the GOAT Bama Iron Bowl victories immortalized by THE KICK.

However, other than his time as a player he never really stayed connected to the University, the state, or the fans...was from south Florida and when he left he went into position coaching ranks in the NFL and was never really visable with respect to staying connected to the program,,,which is why he was an odd choice.

I will say this about Shula, I have met him and he has always been a gentleman and seems like a class act. I really have nothing against him and still like him....he was just in over his head as the coach at Bama. Can't say the same thing about Curry or Perkins both of whom are total arseholes.

Or Curry?

Curry was offered a contract after the '89 season but, from what I recall, it had some provisions in there he didn't care for...he felt dissed since he had led Bama to a share that year of the first SEC title since the Bear. Instead, he accepted an offer to coach Kentucky...

Caught more hell about Curry...Never going to find another Bear...etc. If the internet was like it is today it would have been be much worse... Should have been Bowden... but that's another story.

I agree with all of this, especially the parts about Curry and Perkins.

I call Bill Curry the Jimmy Carter of college football. Utterly incompetent at his job...you know you're really bad when a prince of a man like C.M. Newton has to fire you...and yet in his post-coaching years he always loves to pontificate self-righteously about everything that's wrong with college football.

Curry has often said that he had no idea what kind of a pressure cooker he was getting into when he came to Alabama. Seriously...how stupid can a man be?

Mal suggested he get rid of Rader, Felker and Kines but he didn't and when he finally decided he would after a 2006 loss to AU it was too late

He was never told to get ride of Kines. Joe Kines had some of the best defenses usually top 5 to top 10. Def was never the problem it was always offense and game day decisions like not going for it on 4 and 1 inside your own 3.
