Do you guys remember taking any heat from the media for firing him?
just curious.

I think everyone was more focused on getting Rich Rod at the time.

I remember all the heat from Jesse Jackson for us not hiring Croom. Funny how there have been a bunch of non black coaches hired since then and Jackson hasn't said a word about any of them. As for general heat from media, no.

Not really, but it isn't the same thing at all, look at his record, no sec championships, couldn't beat auburn, etc. At the time I thought we could have reasonably given Shula one more year.
Plus yall wouldn't have taken so much heat if you had just fired miles as opposed to shopping his still occupied job to an FSU coach who also still had a job and then getting cold feat.

Dude had TWO 4-7 seasons.
No more explanation needed.

There was some, but not too much. The backlash I remember was mostly along the lines of "why fire him, you aren't going to get anyone better to take that job".

Yeah definitely....there was a lot of fans and media types who thought he should have got more time and didn't get a fair shake.

No he did not.
He went:
4-9
6-6
10-2
6-6
IMO, he did as good as anyone could have given the circumstances but he also wasn't ever going to be more than slightly better than average.

If I remember correctly, it seemed most expected him to get one more year. When he was fired, it wasn't a surprise, but there was some criticism. Don Shula was very outspoken and the national narrative was no one is going to want the job to coach bama.
Saban was just a grandslam in extra innings with bama down 3 runs after Rich Rod backed out. And the national media was laughing at bama thinking saban would even listen to them. Male Moore worked a miracle. He basically showed up at sabans house one night uninvited while saban was at the dolphins facility. Saban got home, and Mal pulled the sales job of the century for bama.

He sold Terry while Nick wasn't home. She told him not to leave. People were ready to get rid of Mal too. What was funny was the instant fear in sent through the SEC.

A little bit. Quite a different story with him though. He was 26-24 and had 2 losing seasons out of 4, was 1-2 in bowl games and a big o-fer against AU, LSU and won once against UT. Lost both games to UGA, blown out by Ole miss and Arkie more than once and lost to Northern Illinois on homecoming. Never came close to beating Auburn. I believe in 2005?? it was like 27-0 at halftime of the iron bowl.
Now with that said he took over a program on sanctions and nobody would have done much better but there were some serious respect for authority on that team. Players were constantly late for meetings, would bring food into meetings, late to the practice field, etc and he did nothing. His coaching staff was horrible too. Mal suggested he get rid of Rader, Felker and Kines but he didn't and when he finally decided he would after a 2006 loss to AU it was too late.
Les and Shula are two different animals to compare as far as their situation. Shula would have been fired at UK with that record.

Not a fan, ha, but I do remember how Shula's dad went nuts and so did Bob Baumhower. Then, they named Saban (Miami) and they lost their freaking minds! And, not in a happy way, a really, really pissed off way.
Now look at Bob.
Now look at Bob.

Yeah, I listened to saban recount the story on the LeBatard show a year or two ago.
He said he called Terryville on the way home from the Fins facility and she told him Mal was there and he needed to listen to what he had to say. Mal sold Terry who sold Saban really.

No heat for firing him so much as the eat Saban caught. If you remember he was called a liar for 6 months and assassinated in the nationaledia. He was 60 minutes or one of those shows to explain himself.

Mal - "You have total control. F the boosters, I will work for you"
Saban - "Okay, I'm in. Terry call the moving company."

Something else too, sort of unrelated. Those guys that played during Shula's time as a player have just been forgotten. Curt Jarvis, Bobby Humphrey, Al Bell, Greg Richardson, Cornelius Bennett. These were some great players that never won a championship of any kind during their stint. Shula then didn't win one as a coach. I don't think there has ever been a less popular QB at Bama than him. The players mentioned above, I think there is one photo of them in the Bryant museum but basically those teams didn't even exist.
