Thinking back on the season last year, I was frustrated a number of times with our offensive scheme. I felt we didn't utilize the middle of the field and rarely stretched the field vertically. The two games I remember this not being true were South Carolina and Auburn.

So my question is, why didn't we use this same gameplan throughout the year? Was it coaching, defensive gameplans or offensive personnel not executing?

I remember being so excited watching vs. USCe because of the way we utilized RSJ in the middle.

Also, how do y'all see our offense looking this year with the addition of DC?

I think it was mainly player execution.

Two main things were the issue IMO.

Kennedy was hurt for the middle of the year and he seemed to have the most success going over the middle.

When he went down Kenny apparently lost the will to throw his wobblers down the center b/c nobody else was getting as open as MK.

Once MK got back and Kyle Allen took over the middle field passes started to return.

SC - they tried to play a base defense and were mostly worried about the deep ball. They played off and it was really more a gameplan you'd put together to stop Johnny and obviously they hadn't seen Kenny, so it's about all you can do. Kenny loved the underneath and middle of the field passes whereas Johnny loved the outside and deep balls. Just a stylistic thing and neither is right or wrong

Arky - after seeing a number of games from Kenny, they decided to play mostly quarters against us. The modern quarters (cover-4) isn't exactly what it sounds like. It looks a lot like man but what it really is, is man on the 2 outside WRs and zone underneath. The two safeties walk up to the line and the corners drop a bit. Doing this gives better run support and it's usually used against run heavy, play-action teams. But the effect vs us was to take away the middle of the field with a 2-layer zone and dare us to beat them outside and deep. It frustrated us for most of the game bc Kenny couldn't hit the deep ball even when they were open and his comfort zone was the middle and it was being blanketed. It also crushed our running game because there were constantly 7+ in the box. It was a very effective gameplan vs Kenny (though would have sucked vs Manziel)

MSU - didn't copy the above. I don't really remember what they did but it wasn't really all that effective. We moved the ball but turned it over a lot and dropped just a ton. Horrific showing that created tension in the lockerroom due to off-the-field stuff

OM - basically copied the Arky gameplan in the 1H. Kenny was completely unable to function because they were actually a better defense at that point than Arky. Once they had a lead though, they decided not to tempt fate like Arky did and dropped into a base defense opening up the middle more but keeping us from hitting the gamebreakers deep.

There was division in what we should do with part of the offensive staff thinking we should commit to the run regardless of the box numbers. It boiled over after Bama and the run guys won the day vs ULM. That was obviously a catastrophe and Spav went back to full control starting with Auburn. Auburn didn't know what hit them because Allen did not have the same habits and weaknesses as Kenny. He was more than happy to drill those outside balls to Reynolds whenever he saw man coverage

We ran the ball more effectively from that point on because the safeties didn't stand 10 yards beyond the LOS. Mizzou and LSU were both excellent defenses last year. We really pushed them both but Allen, like freshman are, was up and down in those games. They also didn't make the same mistake Auburn did and try to copy a formula to stop Kenny.

DC is going to change some running schematics. He'll bring strategic thinking to the role and provide input into how to effectively attack various defensive looks based on years of seeing people try things against him. I think this year the main differences are you'll see us run into bad boxes more often (ie not allowing opponent schematics completely take our run game away) and you'll see more diverse run schemes. We just didn't vary our look much at all last year.

Honestly it probably had to do with the way sc was giving our guys a ton of room. Much in the same way that we played opposing teams.
