It would be a bitch if Chip Kelly came.

to a point yes...he, ah hell.. anyone can win at Alabama. He would be a huge recruiter and great motivator, but he still commits dumb mistakes from time to time that have cost Vandy a good 7 or 8 wins in his time there.

Please, elaborate. I would love to see your list of these mistakes that cost Vandy that many wins over the last 2 1/2 seasons...

Kirby Smart would be a terrible choice.
The last time we went to the assistant well it was Mike Dubose.
Enough said.
Smart may be a great coach, let him prove it elsewhere.
Hiring an assistant with no HC'ing experince is a complete crap shoot.
Alabama will be in a position when Saban leaves to cherry pick one of the best proven coaches in the country and that's clearly the route they will go.

I am gonna go out on a limb here and say Kirby is no Dubose. How could he make it this long under Saban without at least having a clue? The way Saban rips into his assistants and expects nothing but perfection out of them, I have to think KS is legit.

It's still a huge gamble to hire someone to do a job they've never done before.
Smart may turn out to be an awesome head coach or a terrible one or anywhere in between, he's an unknown. One can be a great assistant and a terrible HC. HC has an entirely different set of responsibilities and things to deal with.
It's much safer and smarter to get a proven successful head coach.

Smart is the most obvious but not necessarily the best choice.
Honestly Dabo probably has the 2nd best chance after Smart.
If that is the case, I PRAY for Smart!

I think the reasoning behind the Smart promotion is that Saban has a vast process currently in place that affects not only the players, but the whole whole programs infastructure. Some may want to see if Smart can keep/maintain that infastructure. He is a great recruiter. So in 3 years or so if it is apparent that he can't keep it going, then we go out and hire a proven coach (who doesn't have to be the guy replacing Saban, which is some big shoes to fill), and they would still be coming into a fully stacked roster.

IF rumors are true, & Saban Moves into the AD position when retires from coaching, what proven coach would want to work for Saban?

Serious question here: Has there ever been a long time asst coach that took over after a long time HC and been successful? I just can't think of any at this point. Seems like it never works out.
