Pete Thamel ? Verified account @PeteThamel

With Alabama hiring Nate Oats as its next head coach, here's his story. Six years ago, Oats was teaching high school algebra and selling Flaming Hot Cheetos out of his classroom. Now he's in the SEC.

How Nate Oats went from high school math teacher to the country's hottest coach

Wonder if his past high school coaching roots would help pull Bucky McMillan on his staff if he wanted him? Pure speculation on my part of course.

Yes - which is something I'm very happy with.

Fast, efficiency, tempo

They rank in the Top 20 in shortest offensive possession length every year he's been there, Top 40 in Tempo.

That sounds good to me.

Now it will be interesting to see what his staff is, how the roster is constructed/patched together this summer, etc.

I'm choosing to stick with cautious optimism.

Honestly this probably suits the guys on the roster right now who will be back. We've got length, quickness, and a few guys who can get hot from 3.

This also sounds a lot like Mountain Brook's style of play...

This is what I don't get. Matta was a Twitter rumor...why are we made at that? Forbes has 1 NCAAT and just got ousted in the first round of the CBI by Green Bay...we want him over this?

Oats is an awesome coach. I was there last year when they stomped Ayton and Arizona in the NCAA tournament and it was incredible. His team was as likeable as can be, they score tons of points, he recruits well, and most importantly, the program at Buffalo is getting better the longer he stays there. I'm stoked.

You won't find me bashing Mike in regards to coaching as much as other Arkansas fans but it was much easier to teach that system in the 90s than today.

Well, he wasn't high on my radar, but he looks like a great mid major hire. I like what I'm reading. I guess we'll just have to see how it works out. Could be meh, could be the best coach in the country. Being a math and physics teacher, I'm betting he has a system and great plays.

Interestingly Oats got his start as a highly successful high school coach in Wisconsin and was brought on staff by Hurley, who recognized his coaching talent while recruiting one of his players.

He was my first choice all along. Fantastic Hire

I’m dying on the inside after the Matta “news”. I’m sure Byrne leaked it to some inside loud mouth who no longer has a job.

Will Wade, Chris Beard

Both teams are in the sweet 16

This is why I'm not super worried about him being the guy to reap the rewards of what someone else built. He's not Les Miles riding Saban's coattails for a few years and then watching the program slowly decline. Buffalo is a lot better now than they were when Hurley left. And Oats was part of the staff that built them up anyway. It's not a flashy hire, but I think it's a good one.
