apparently if a high school student from certain northern states has a 3.5 gpa and 30 act score they get free tuition and room at nick Saban U. Is this good?

Damn those are some low standards

They are aggressively recruiting those Northern dollars. Not sure it is such a bad idea. They have name value and discount from the Us around here. When a flight is 300-400 there is a lot to be said for affordability

The problem is they are out pricing the average Alabama Family with the tuition hikes. All those out of state students will leave AL in their rearveiw mirror after they get their degree. All those buildings, roads and other infrastructures were built on the backs of AL taxpayers, now their state schools are catering to educating kids from everywhere else. A product of ego and a desire to be big.

If you can play football you get a free car as well.

Isn't that true for in-State students too? It was at one time.

A lot of kids from the Bay Area are going to UA. From good homes too

It is called diversity and Alabama has not excelled at it in their past to say the least. Nice to see them finally grasp the concept.

There are many wealthy Yankees at UA now. This is sadly true of all SEC universities. The administration are elitist Leftists, so naturally they would like to distance themselves from the south. Although I don't think your scholarship information is correct, after looking at the website.

I doubt it's free tuition.
Arkansas does a similar thing, where they discount OOS tution to nearly in-state amounts for students who meet those criteria.
It started just with Texas and Oklahoma. Now it includes every state that touches Arkansas, plus Illinois and Kansas.

No, students from ANY state qualify for PARTIAL tuition (and no room and board at all) at that score.

As state governments cut funding, major universities will seek out students from elsewhere to make up the difference. This has been happening at UA for more than a decade, This trend isn't unique to Alabama. In fact, it is happening all over the country (see, e.g., Wisconsin).
Positive: The state university inures itself to the whims of the state legislature.
Negative: The state university becomes increasing separated from its original mission to serve the people of its state, and operates according to its own logic.

I won't argue about the state money or any of the economic stuff because I'm ignorant of all the specifics.
But I will say I think there has been a definite trickle down effect to the smaller schools in the state that coincides with Alabama's expansion.
I've noticed a lot more in-state kids who grew up Alabama fans choosing smaller in-state schools because they either don't meet the higher admission standards OR who don't want to go to a big school, like Alabama is now.
My son is heading to Troy in three weeks because Alabama was too big for him. He's not the only one - lots of kids choosing places like UNA, Troy, and USA lately than in the past.
The improvement of these schools is a positive for the state. It's not always about just Alabama or Auburn when we talk about state universities.
