Like indefensibly, unarguably laughable.

Please, by all means, explain how there is any difference whatsoever?

Does it really matter. At the time, folks believed that ND was the National Champion. It was great TV and helped folks realize how we picked NC in the past was bogus.

No Auburn fan would disagree, but try to stay on topic in this thread.

No, you didn't. Which was smart of you because it would make you look like a moron.

quote:So everything since then has been ok with you?.....Oh yeah, go bitch to the Coaches Poll....they're the ones who gave them the trophy. We've just got it nestled in our trophy case along with all the others that some national organization gave us.

You had to go back 45 years to find something to bitch about?
I didn't have to, it was just particularly laughable in this case. Like indefensibly, unarguably laughable.

I'm not complaining, I'm laughing.

Oklahoma lost their 1950 bowl game to Kentucky, but they claim that year as ap/upi national champions since it was voted on before the bowl game.

Tennessee lost their 1951 bowl game to Maryland and still claims the ap/upi title because they were voted on before the bowl game.

Simple answer to this all: Alabama beat themselves in '73. RB fumbled; missed XP late in 4th quarter.

Lame no matter what but did the team that beat them head to head also have a better record?

Michigan state claims their shared portion of a title for 1965 given to them by the coaches before the bowl games which they lost. But Alabama won their bowl game and the AP.

Texas lost their bowl game in 1970 to #6 ND, but claims the coaches poll title which was voted on before the bowl games.
Meanwhile, Nebraska lost no games & beat the #5 LSU team & won the ap poll, but the coaches had already voted for Texas as the national champion.

In all seriousness, the NCAA really should go back and review national titles from the past and make it more clear and legitimate.
Also, to show my reasonableness I will fully admit bama got screwed in 66 (I think that was the year).

1978, USC beat Bama in the 3rd game of the season, but then lost to an unranked team later in the year.
Bama beat the #1 team in a bowl game, with one of the greatest plays in ncaa history - THE RISING OF THE TIDE
Alabama beat Penn State 14-7 in the Sugar Bowl to lay claim to the national title.
USC beat the #5 team in their bowl game with a play that is considered one of the worst calls in sports history. Phantom TD - 10. Charles White's TD and fumble in 1979 Rose Bowl
Bama picked #1 by AP; USC claims their share with the coaches title even though they were beaten by an unranked team and beat a lower rank team in the bowl game.

You do know that Auburn shares the 1957 title with Ohio State. Auburn won the AP before the bowls because Auburn could not play in a bowl & Ohio State beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl & won the Coaches.
