The Dickeys in Tuscaloosa is not good. Not terrible, but not good.

The only way you say that is from not having had an Archibald's rib in your mouth. If anyone goes to Tuscaloosa for a visit and doesn't get a slab of ribs from the original Archibald's, they're doing life wrong.
The meat at Archibalds is good. I am not a fan of the sauce (or spare ribs for that matter). I actually prefer the pulled pork at Archibalds.

Can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned Hicks BBQ. That place is the shite. Archibalds is awesome though. The Dreamland on Judd Factory road is alright, but the one in Northport is "meh".
Honestly, pony up some cash and go to either Southern Ale House or Avenue Pub.

Dickey's is a nationwide chain, and very meh in general. Free ice cream, though, so that's cool.

But honestly I'm sure that's true for a bunch of "legendary" college town restaurants. Once they are popular enough to make 3-4 of them around town, the quality generally suffers
Yeah, I remember when Chuy's was on Barton Springs, and it was really good. Now it's everywhere, and it's nowhere near as good.

The Chuys in Tuscaloosa is probably the worst Chuys.

The Chuys up at the Summit Mall in Birmingham is good to me. It has an awesome patio with a nice view.

Is Hick's still around? They used to have a couple different locations around town, but I haven't seen one in years. Probably since the one on 15th by Forest Lake closed, at least I think that one used to be a Hick's. It was just okay.
As others have said, Archibald's is the only place worth a visit. Dreamland is terrible, though the sauce is still good.
Jim N Nick's isn't terrible, but they have locations all over now. And their non-barbecue offerings are better than their actual barbecue, TBH.

What do you folks look for in good BBQ? I know some folks don't know what to look for in reality. I go for a juicy light fat pulled pork. Sauce is pretty important, what do you guys prefer? Vinegar, mustard based?
Not TTown but while I'm st Augustine I had Mojos and the Carolina Pork and Sweet
mash was amazing.
With all that said Archibald depending on what you get.

Only the original. The chain by the river isn't good.

Looks like Archibald's is the overwhelming favorite, but I really don't like a vinegar based sauce. I prefer a sweet tomato based that is a little spicy. That is why I usually end up at Jim and Nicks.

Well, that's what the sauce at Archibald's is. Real tangy and spicy and runny thin. Same with Dreamland and Moe's(a place I haven't seen mentioned), though Moe's is a little thicker. Pretty sure it's still vinegar based though.
I can't think of a decent place in Tuscaloosa that has a sweet tomato based sauce. Johnny Ray's maybe, if there's one still around there. Their meat is pretty bad though. Don't go there.

That looks like the Hicks in Northport. There was an Archibalds and Woodrow's right next door if it is. Used to eat lunch at that Hicks twice a week

Dreamland opened one in baton rouge, there was a line out of the door for about two weeks.
Closed a year or so later.

Hicks is still on Highway 43 (Northport). Been there many-a-time

Ah, now I recall that one. There used to be one on Skyland Blvd across from Tuscaloosa Toyota years ago.
And I just remembered Pottery Grill in Cottondale. Is that place still open? They had really good barbecue back in the 90's. Haven't eaten there since though.

The Dreamland in Montgomery is really good. The one in Bham is ok.

I am not a sauce guy, tho white sauce has grown on me (is fantastic on chicken). I judge BBQ on the taste of meat alone. How juicy is it? How does the season/smoke taste? If I have to soak it in sauce, the pit master didn't do a very good job.
