In Barfield's first four years as head coach, he went 13-10-1 in the SEC for 0.565 in-conference winning percentage.

Currently, Gus has a 14-11 record in the SEC his first three years for 0.560 in-conference winning percentage. In order to have a higher in-conference winning percentage for four years compared to Barfield, Gus must lead Auburn to at least 5-3 in the SEC this year.

Let that sink in.

i was a young man during the barfield years and "Yes" it does kind of remind me of them, although it still has a way to go to get quite as low...barfield actually did have some decent offenses, though....defense was the problem....who i would hire would be art briles....it all boils down to perception: do you want to be considered a politically incorrect rube, or continue to be a laughingstock

At least in the Barfield era we could develop offensive players. Defense absolutely sucked though.

Here's the overall record of the SEC teams AU beat from 1976-79:

1976
Tennessee 6-5
Ole Miss 5-6

1977
Tennessee 4-7
Ole Miss 5-6
Florida 6-4-1
UGa 5-6

1978
Tennessee 5-5-1
Vandy 2-9
Miss State 6-5

1979
Vandy 1-10
Florida 0-10-1
Miss State 3-8
UGa 6-5

In other words, Barfield was incapable of beating any SEC team that finished with more than 6 wins overall. The closest he came was in 1978, when AU tied UGa, who finished the year 9-2-1.

The TAMU team AU beat last year was better than any SEC team AU ever defeated in the Barfield era.

Let THAT sink in.

You need to remind me which year Barfield took us to an SEC Championship and competed for a national championship, because I must have missed it.

Gus is his own worst enemy. When he gets out of his own way and doesn't insist on being cute and gimmicky as an offensive philosophy, he runs a brilliant offense. For whatever reason though, he currently can't see the forrest for the trees. His offense has regressed from innovative to running the wing t. At the rate he's going, he'll have us running the Notre Dame box before the end of the season. It sounds cliche, but until he gets back to football basics of one quarterback running the show and building an offense around his strengths, we will remain disjointed offensively. I know he said Sean is the guy yesterday, but Gus has burned up a lot of capital, and I refuse to believe it until I see it. I've seen him kill too drives with JJ, going all the way back to the Nick Marshall era. He can't help himself.

Malzahn now 14 - 12 all-time in SEC.

He's got to go 5 - 2 in conference the rest of the way this year to have a better 4 year record than Barfield.

Not a good night but at least Gus won 5 SEC games this year thereby having a better winning % (just barely) in the SEC for 4 years.
