This poll values consistency a lot.

Agree, but it doesn't place higher value on being consistently great. To give same points for # of weeks in top 25 as you would for # of weeks in top 5 is crazy. It lumps all top 25 appearances together. I'd like it more if they put a weighting system on it like 1 point for weeks in top 25, 2 for weeks in top 10, 3 for weeks in top 5, 5 for weeks at #1, and 10 points for AP national titles. They you see how is consistently among the top 5-10 programs in history.

Alabama is weird program among the blue bloods. Alabama will be an unstoppable forces for 10-20 years then decide to take break for 5-10 years.

Well, a lot of teams have been that way really. ND went through a weird stretch. OU did before Stoops. FSU was down toward the last 4-5 years with Bowden. But I agree that Bama's stretch of Perkins and Curry, and their later stretch of the Mikes were weird anomalies in the Tide's history.

I'm triggered by the formula.

To determine the all-time Top 25, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (one point) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 points).

I will say gaining a point for being ranked number 1 is kinda weird. If they wanted to value elite programs more they should give more points for top 10 finishes instead.

However, that won't make Bama the #1 program all time still. It won't push LSU or Auburn much higher up the rankings. I think Georgia and Texas would receive the biggest benefit of a formula change.

If you weighed national championships more, Alabama, Nebraska, and Miami would rise up the list but that won't help the rest of the SEC much.

Except that's not true. Two periods of about 5-7 years each. During the 1950s and again in the early 2000s. Regardless, they've also won a SEC title in every decade and have the most poll titles.

It's apples and oranges. Consistency is weighted heavily so Alabama has a couple pretty bad decades whereas tOSU and OU have only had roughly 1 bad 10 year stretch. This ranking has a pretty modern twist to it. Imagine where Bama would be ranked without the last 3 titles.

Ohio State is the only one that really hasn't had a bad stretch in the 80 years of the AP poll.

Wouldn't this just mean that OSU and Okie are a bit overrated?
OSU - #1 in weeks at #1 - 105
Titles - 5
Avg - 21 weeks at #1 for every title
Okie - #2 in weeks at #1 - 100.5
Titles - 7
Avg - 14.35 weeks per title

Then we have Alabama
Weeks at #1 - 74
Titles - 10
Avg - 7.4 weeks per title

What it means is that at the end of the schedule Ohio State usually had a very good Michigan team (God it hurts me to type that) to face.

ETA: I'm as surprised as anyone that Ohio State topped this list. They are certainly a top 3-5 program IMO and since the advent of the AP poll there's a strong argument for somewhere in the top 3.

In years past, the Mid-West had more voters than any other region. So, I'm not surprised.

Bingo. The AP was and always has been a popularity contest with bias towards media rich schools and regions.

Top 5 is still good enough for me. That's suspect to have FSU and Florida in the top 10 though.

You missed the 80's and 90's apparently. Oh yea, Bama sucked for most of it so you were either not born or drunk.

That's like the opposite of the Midwest...if that was the case USC, And Texas would top the list.

That's really not true, especially, for most of the AP's existence and USC and Texas have benefited from that as well. However, East Coast media was dominant.

I'm a numbers guy so I delved into the final AP poll of each season.

AP Final Poll History 1936-2008

You have to dig a little deeper to get 2009-2015 but the link has most of the information.

Ohio State Final AP Poll

#1 - 5 times
#2 - 6 times
#3-5 - 14 times
#6-10 - 10 times
#11-15 - 14 times
#15-20 - 5 times
#21-25 - 1 time

Ranked in the final poll 55 of 80 years. Note that in the 1960s there was only a top 10 ranking. Ranked in the top two 11 times and in the top five 25 out of 80 years and in the top ten 39 of 80 years. To the posters that said that it's a consistency rating I agree. I don't know how many other programs can boast being in the top two 11 times or in the top 10 nearly every other year at the end of the season.

since 1960 there has been a panel from across the country, all equally represented. Before the panel MANY teams won AP titles by stuffing the ballot boxes. Case in point, 1957 Auburn..won the AP title over Ohio State by a few votes. Auburn made sure every 10 watt AM radio station in Alabama had a vote that year.

Now Auburn was undefeated, and Ohio St had one early loss..but without the ballot stuffing..OSU would have won the title. I suspect before the panel..that went on everywhere..which really makes titles before 1960 suspect.

What? Alabama was solid in both decades. At least two conference titles in each and a national title in 1992.

This poll is an absolute slap in the face to Alabama. Oklahoma is the most overrated team of all time, and especially post 2000. Has any number one team had its arse kicked more times in BCS bowls, and now the playoff, than Oklahoma?

Most memorable:

Boise State running the statue of liberty in the fiesta bowl.

Reggie Bush slapping his dick on the face of Jason White in the Orange Bowl.

West Virginia bending Bob Stoops over in the Fiesta Bowl.

LSU tea bagging Jason White in the Sugar Bowl.
