Recruiting is a big part of coaching. Saban is a great recruiter and tireless worker, but he beats you with his Jimmy and Joe's, not with the X and O's.
He will go down as one of, if not the greatest college coach ever.....but if you factor in his recruiting classes you cold possible say he has underachieved with the amount of talent at his disposal.

Not sure. When you refer to gameday coaching are you referring to getting skull fricked by arky 30-0 and tcu looking like they took an overdose of viagra on you in the bowl game.

This is all I am saying. He has more talent in almost every game he enters. If you have more talent and lose is it not fall back on the Coaches? Then he would be getting out coached by coaches with lesser talent.

but a lot of coaches have won nationally championships without having the number one recruiting class every single year like Saban does
name the coaches who have won national championships that haven't consistently recruited at an elite level

Yeah well he's got four. So go play make believe somewhere else.

For all Saban's recruiting prowess, he also only has one undefeated season in his entire career. This goes back to the point that a lot of his national championships required a decent amount of luck. I personally view Saban as one of the luckier coaches of all time more than one of the greatest coaches of all time

This is why you should have to reach 500 posts before you can start a thread.

I have seen some of your threads and most of them still sucked even after your 500th post

I said before the game that Saban is overrated as a game day coach. Great recruiter but not great on gameday.
His greatest strength in building a team and program is his stubbornness: you do it my way and no other. But it occasionally bites him on game day when he refuses to make adjustments.

The best players want to play for the best coaches. It isn't Saban's fault that his continued success brings more and more of the best recruits.
He's one of the best college coaches of all time. There's no doubt about it.

Nick Saban, Urban Meyer (Utah), Chris Peterson (Boise), Bob Stoops, Gary Patterson and Jimbo Fisher are the only current coaches with any undefeated seasons. Chris Peterson and Urban Meyer are the only coaches with multiple undefeated seasons, and Meyer went undefeated without a conference championship game or bowl game in 2012 at Ohio St. So what exactly is your point?

Wait, Saban beats people with his Jimmies?

Dude has been on the receiving end of kick six, cam back (the fumble that stayed inbounds), flukey JFF, and now flukey Swag. He's definitely had some incredible bad luck over the years.

I hate Nick Saban, but he's one of the best ever. Not really debatable.
*if* he only had 1-2 maybe it'd be different. But he's got 4, so that point is stupid

Don't forget about Chiz

Hence my post that said he was a great recruiter but lacked some on gameday.

Thanks for proving my point. Jimbo Fisher has only been a head coach for about 4 years and he already has as many undefeated seasons as Saban does in 20 years. Gene Chizik also has as many undefeated seasons as Saban. More proof he is not one of the greatest coaches of all time

Well his lack of game day coaching hasn't prevented him from winning four national titles.
