All coaches are only as good as the players they coach. But recruiting is a big part of coaching. I don't think you can judge a coaches greatness by his players, but you can sure see shortcomings, aka Texas.

Well his lack of game day coaching hasn't prevented him from winning four national titles.
Debatable

Hence my post that said he was a great recruiter but lacked some on gameday.
no one is perfect. it's really hard to go through a season unscathed, regardless of how good your players are. but go back and look at Saban's losses at Alabama:
2015: Ole Miss (currently ranked 3rd)
2014: Ole Miss (finished #17), Ohio State (finished #1)
2013: Auburn (finished #2), Oklahoma (finished #6)
2012: Texas A&M (finished #5)
2011: LSU (finished #2)
2010: USC (finished #22), LSU (finished #8), Auburn (finished #1)
2009: no one
2008: Florida (finished #1), Utah (finished #2)
I'm discounting 2007, Saban's first year because none of those players were his.
So the worst loss in Saban's career at Alabama post 2007 was to A south Carolina team, on the road, that finished in the top 25. He's only had two losses to teams that finished outside the top 10. Yes, he has made some bad calls in games, but every coach has at some point in their careers.

Thanks for proving my point. Jimbo Fisher has only been a head coach for about 4 years and he already has as many undefeated seasons as Saban does in 20 years. Gene Chizik also has as many undefeated seasons as Saban. More proof he is not one of the greatest coaches of all time
What's Chizick up to these days? Saban won a national title in year 4 at LSU and in year 3 at Alabama. I don't know why you're so hung up on undefeated seasons. Even in the days of no scholarship limitations and in an era of much less college football parity, Bear Bryant had just 3 undefeated seasons in 38 years as a head coach. Bobby Bowden had one, in his 30th year as a coach. Steve Spurrier has zero. It took Tom Osborne 22 years before his first.

Lavell Edwards, Don James, Bobby Ross and Bill McCartney. To give a littler perspective, Alabama had at least 18 players drafted from the 2010 BCS team. None of the other coaches had more than 8 get drafted by the NFL.

no coach...in any sport...has ever won anything significant with a team full of shitty players.
fact
fact

And that loss to South Carolina in 2010 was just a case of running into a good team that played a near perfect game. Bama didn't play all that badly as I recall but the Cocks would have beaten anyone in the country on that particular day.

That's a matter of opinion, and frankly I would be disappointed if persons such as yourself enjoyed my posts.

quote:As I said, you're getting dumber with each post! Who in hell ever said that the # of undefeated seasons had shite to do with determining a tGOAT coach? The quality of competition (conference, toughness of OOC games, etc.) varies and careers must be judged, not individual seasons...man, stop digging.

yep, also I'll throw out the fact that Saban has only lost by more than one score 4 times (largest margin of defeat being 14 points) and his average margin of defeat in his 11 losses in 8 years is 7.5 points. I can't stand Alabama or Nick Saban but to downplay his success and/or his coaching ability is plain ignorant. In this era of college football, to do what he's done is, quite frankly, remarkable. Is he the best of all-time? maybe, maybe not. Is he in the conversation? absolutely.

2009 didn't count even before McCoy got hurt.
I am a huge LSU fan and we got screwed on that call...but I seriously doubt we would have pulled that game out with that interception

Are you really tGOAT coach if you can't get the best players for your team?
