You won't hear me arguing that I'm from the Deep South, ever.

Ha I know, I don't really understand why people get offended when they aren't included.

My high school friends from East Tennessee used to get furious when I was say that the Tri-Cities weren't the South, they were Appalachia. Who cares? You are what ya are. It isn't like being Southern is some sort of magical badge of honor nationally, more the opposite.

I mean don't get me wrong, I love telling people I'm southern, but I don't really know why someone would beg to be recognized as that when they aren't. Though, when the alternate is Appalachian.....might make more sense.

Yeah I could not give a single frick, and I know full well where I am from (Houston) and where I went to school (College Station) are definitely not part of the Deep South

It is all kind of moot with Texas anyway. I've never met someone from Texas (originally from Texas) that doesn't identify themselves as a Texan. If anyone from Texas says they are from "the South" then they are imposters clearly not from Texas. Am I right?

Pretty much. You see confederate flags around, especially in East Texas like Longview/Carthage and shite, but they still see themselves as Texans above anything

I swear I see more Confederate flags in states that were not part of the Confederacy than I ever do in Alabama or Georgia. Quite frankly, I could count the number of times I saw a rebel flag sticker on car on one hand in the last 2-3 years in trips between Tuscaloosa/Birmingham and Atlanta. Makes me pretty happy to be honest.

Ironically, I'd say the Tri-Cities are much further South than Knoxville. That's the one area of the East that was very confederate. Sullivan county was one of only a handful in E. TN that voted for secession/confederacy instead of being pro-Union. I don't think they were a part of East, TN's efforts to secede from Tennessee once the state voted to go with the confederacy either.

If I remember correctly Sullivan did want to secede but Washington and the counties to the East (Johnson, Unicoi, Carter) voted to join the Free State of Franklin (or whatever the Civil War era name for it was - FSOF was the late 1700s attempt).
