Yeah that's just weird. Texas was part of the confederacy and that area of East Texas is about as Deep South as TX gets, so it's not surprising to me. I've only been in Phoenix briefly but it was like a weird knock off of Southern California to me

If I remember correctly Sullivan did want to secede but Washington and the counties to the East (Johnson, Unicoi, Carter) voted to join the Free State of Franklin.

Yup, Sullivan was it's own special place. I don't know what to do with it.

I have a hard time describing it to friends at school and don't even attempt to describe it to friends I work with. Not ashamed, necessarily, just hard to explain. I just say I live in the Tri-Cities near the Bristol racetrack. That's all they need to know.

Apparently not very well, sport.

I don't know how to either. It's an area that almost has a culture all its own. I can't think of anywhere else that it's like. I mean it resembles some of Upper East, TN but in a lot of ways it's just different.

Always felt a lot more like Gate City and the rest of SW VA to me. I did not look at that as a positive.

That is probably a closer description of it. Personally, I'm suspicious of our Lt. Governor/Speaker of the Senate because he's from Sullivan and extremely conservative. He has changed TN's government culture from a more mellow form republicanism to shite getting embarrassing.

Oxfart and Auburn ranked ahead of six other towns? Did the voters smoke crack while writing down their votes? Name one person who isn't an Old Miss or Auburn homer that would rather spend a weekend in Oxfart/Auburn over any other SEC city not named Starkville...

Texas is Texas, and you can't get away from rednecks anywhere in Alabama or Mississippi.

I grew up in Northeast Jackson.

Concur. I don't get their criteria. Tim Brando can eat a bag of dicks, for various reasons. I've been to college towns all over. Fayetteville compares favorably to most.

I think Fayetteville should have been higher, and Nashville and Baton Rouge shouldn't have been on the list.

Athens over Nashville.

Agree with that, but Knoxville, overall, is depressing as hell. Makes no sense to include it for surrounding beauty but rank Fayetteville so low (which is a much nicer town also situated in a nice area).

I agree. I'd put Fayetteville higher than Auburn for sure from the towns I've visited on the list, and to be honest I'd rather live in Fayetteville than Baton Rouge and Knoxville for fricking sure. It's got a nice craft brew scene and a young population which I can appreciate. Definitely think Fayetteville got rammed in the list.

Athens is good sized but feels quaint at times, while Tuscaloosa isn't a metropolis, but isn't Athens either.

There isn't a road in Athens that is as busy of backed up on a constant basis as McFarland Bvd. from I-20 headed West... I have a customer I have to visit once a month on Rice Mine Rd. & that 5.5 mile trip from I-20 takes anywhere from 25-30 minutes minimum every time I visit...

Only place I hate worse is a customer I visit the same day that is 7 miles south of I-459 on 280...

I hope they'll finally find a way to build the eastern Tuscaloosa bypass for those reasons, among others. But it's talked about for 20 years, so I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

Ok guys here's the deep south from wiki.

quote:

The states in dark red compose the Deep South today. Adjoining areas of East Texas, North Florida and the Florida Panhandle are also considered part of this subregion. Historically, these seven states formed the original Confederate States of America.

It is and I'm not a hog fan. Very nice, booming and steady growing.
