Not at all. My father was at every little league game...football game and MOST practices while I was growing up. He was a vey loving father, but strict. He set an excellent example for me on how to treat other people and how to act in public. There was only one instance when I felt he was out of line or unfair....and that included no sticks, switches, belt or physical demonstratio at all. just words. There are times when words hurt far worse than a belt or switch.

I also feel that beating is a word often used by people to make spanking sound worse. Gotta admit....beating sounds MUCH worse!

If it makes you feel better I've got a 5 foot piece of water hose that I use to whip my dog. Works just fine, haven't had to use it in a long time though. They learn right from wrong just like a person.

I have always been amazed at the nolstagic waxing a bunch of men will do when this subject is brought up.

It's hilarious........

I'm going to puke if I read one more self-aggrandizing look-at-how-tough-I-am sappy story about "granny's switch" or "daddy's belt".

What a bunch of mindless horseshite. None of these cliche stories are about thoughts on disciplining kids. Their just about trying to make the person typing the bullshite story sound tough or old-school or something.

If you put bleeding welts up and down the legs of a 4-year-old. Of your own flesh and blood. Well..........I would of thought that it goes without saying what that reveals about someone. But, apparently not.

What a joke.

Please go on.....

Give us more fresh updates about "granny's switch" and "daddy's belt"......and how you had to walk to school barefoot in the snow. Uphill. Both ways......

Okay. So, we've got switches, belts, tree branches, and paddles...........

I think that clearly the ones who were spanked with paddles are the "toughest" and most "old school" of all. So, the rest of you can sit down.

We just need to find out whose parents used the biggest paddle now, to determine who is the mostest "old school" self-aggrandizing cool guy.

We talking boat paddles, ping-pong, or what here? Lets crown a Champ!!!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!....

I did walk to school a bit and it was uphill both ways, granted, it was downhill both ways at times too. I had to walk after I got kicked off the bus for a month.

I was spanked. No utilities used that I remember. Used to get a choice: get spanked and do X (such as play in baseball game) or sit out the game. Other times, I got grounded and chores added. They tried everything. Nothing really worked outside of generous rewards.....

On the contrary, I THINK most are trying to point out that we got spankings and neve called them beatings and it did not thing to warp us or ruin our lives.

However, I would also hope that most on here realize that leaving marks, welts or bruises on a 4 year old is totally unacceptable. However, to say children should not be spanked because one parent crossed over the line would be something akin to saying coaches should not run their teams to get them in shape because one coach ran his team into heat exhaustion.

There are limits to everything that should be adhered to.

I have spanked one of my kids and realized it did nothing but made me feel better....and taught the kid that if your bigger and stronger you can force your will on those who are smaller and weaker.
That is something I never got from being spanked. If a parent disciplines with love and explains to the child why they are being disciplined, the "lesson" shouldn't be that you are free to inflict physical violence based on whether or not you can get away with it, or if you are bigger or stronger than your victim. Sorry, but I think that's a screwed up way of looking at discipline.

Perhaps you were beaten without mercy and your caregiver(s) didn't really care about your well-being or whether or not you would learn the right lesson. If so, then that is truly sad, but that is not how discipline should be enforced.

Different forms of discipline work better on different kids, so spanking may not be needed for every child to get them to learn their lesson. The reason why spanking is a universal (or used to be) punishment is because pain is a deterrent everyone understands, even children. The point of it (or any form of discipline) is to teach children that bad/unacceptable behavior has negative consequences and it is supposed to train them not to act that way. The point of teaching children this early on is supposed to be to prevent greater or more serious consequences in the future as they get older and the impact of their behavior is greater and they are held more accountable or responsible for their actions by more people (bosses, spouses, friends, government, etc.)

I believe that if spanking is to be used, it should be done in a controlled way. I don't believe in spanking out of anger or frustration, since you're probably not as much in control of your own actions (how hard your spank them or where) if you are emotionally compromised. I also believe that spanking should be accompanied with an explanation of why the punishment was being implemented as well as affirmation that you still love the child and are doing it to correct their behavior.

For those that say that spanking just reinforces the notion that hitting others is OK, I would say that it shouldn't. Most things we do in life are contextual. Killing someone in cold blood is immoral and illegal, but killing someone in self-defense or in defense of someone else is moral and legal. Therefore "killing" is not necessarily wrong in itself. The same thing applies to other forms of violence, such as corrective discipline through spanking.

Exactly. I did this with my children. After I spanked them, I would sit them on my knee and explain why they got a spanking. Then I always gave them a hug and kiss.

For the poster that said it did nothing but make you feel better? I never felt better. More often than not I cried afterwards.

I got my arse whooped alot. I have one older brother and my dad had a 2 by 4 paddle that he made. Anytime we did something real bad we had to go out into the shop and he had a talk with us and always got 5 licks. Then after the licks he made us sit on a wood crate and think about what we did for a while. I hated it, but it made me do better.

I do not have kids yet but I am planning on spanking when needed girl/boy.

Very much the way I was raised. I have two kids and if needed, then they will get the same. Like you, I also hated it but it also made me do better.
