"From the officiating standpoint, we kind of got caught up in this thing and allowed ourselves to sort of get overwhelmed by it," NCAA coordinator of officials Rogers Redding said. "Too much rushing around, hurrying and trying to be speedy about getting the ball in play and it sort of put the defense at a disadvantage."
Now, the officials are taking the pace back.

"It's not revolutionary, but it sort of calls attention to the need for the officials not to make the ball ready for play until all the officials are in position," said Redding, a referee in the SEC from 1994-2004. "That may mean cleaning up the sideline before, but having the umpire sort of crisply jog but don't sprint, hustle but don't hurry in getting the ball ready for play."

I think the officials will slow the game down some this year.

Solution: find refs that aren't lazy.

Good. No one, least of all the officials, should be out of position due to up-tempo play. Offenses already have enough of an advantage knowing the play and where the ball is going. The defenses are already having to expend more effort to compensate for misdirection, fakes, etc. let alone not being able to substitute in a timely manner. Teams that want near continuous offense can play basketball.

This is just common sense by Redding. No reason for coaches on the offensive side of the ball to dictate how fast the officials spot the ball. Officials need to go at a pace that allows them to get into position to do their job properly.

Reminds me of the 2000 MSU-Arkansas game. State runs the ball to the 2-yard line or so with 12-15 seconds left in the first half. The ref puts the ball down, then stands over it for at least 6-7 seconds while time expires. The crowd was going nuts screaming at the ref to move.

The refs shouldn't dictate anything. If the offense wants to start they should be able to start.

This is great! It will help prevent the officials form missing infractions due to being out of position.

I mean almost every rule change in the past 50 years has been aiding offenses. Maybe it's time they even it out

This is bullshite. Football has always been about innovation and trying to get a decent advantage over teams that are athletically superior to you.

Hell, there is very little parity in college football because about 20 schools suck up all of the good talent. Then, some teams start innovating and beating those teams once in a blue moon and now people want a rule change.

The HUNH teams never broke any rules. They just played a brand of football that big slow juggernaut guys had trouble stopping every once in a while.

Bama, YGM.

Rogers Redding made a mistake by going public with this issue. If it looks like the refs are trying to slow things down this year, he will be without a job and officals will be under a stronger microscope. Before it is over, the max age of an Official will be under 35 years old.
