Should cops wear camera's at all times while on duty?

When cops in a Rialto, California were forced to wear cameras, their use of force dropped by over two-thirds. Additionally, the officers who were not made to wear the cameras used force twice as much as those who did. This strongly suggests the majority of the time police use force is unnecessary. In other words, the majority of the time these officers used force they were simply committing acts of violence which they don't feel comfortable committing if it's captured on film.

Seems like this would solve a lot of problems and show both sides of every story.

I think they should or the public should be allowed to record their encounter with them. Some cops are power hungry and I have had a personal experience with one recently in my local area. The cop I encountered basically threaten me cause I didn't want to talk to him and went over his head. He made it a point to ride by my place of residence and came by looking for me

Are you a patrol cop?
I am just suggesting that cops that are in communities every day simply wear a chest mounted camera to protect both themselves and their police depts from legal trouble and have a "what else should he have done" for the media.

They can, it's your legal right to record any public servant as long as you aren't interfering with them.

You know cops would not like that you're recording them

The up front cost would be a pretty penny but they would save in the long run because of a decrease in law suits. Good cops should push for it as it would push the bad cops out and prove that their actions in a situation were lawful. I can see an issue with always being filmed as they go about the day so some guidelines would have to be put into place like tape is only reviewed if an incident occurs and only the incident and any time leading up to it is reviewed. I don't think it would be a good idea to let cops turn the camera on and off because an honest cop could easily forget to turn it on during the heat of a moment and a bad cop would just constantly keep it off.

fwiw it should be even easier for undercover/ swat guys to have a go pro on. They could confirm they are at the actual right address and that they shot a threat instead of someone giving up.

So? For the most part there isn't much they can do. Granted if you give them the smallest reason, i.e. stand to close to the crime scene or even talk over them they can get you for obstruction, but as long as you are following the letter of the law there isn't really a thing they can do. It will put a target on your back tho that's for sure.

We use safe crisis management in the school I work in and most everything is on camera. Quite frankly, more than once it has covered our asses when a parent has tried to drop the "But my baby wasn't doin nothin to have them put their hands on him!1!1". Given the times, if I was a cop I'd probably welcome it.

Then what are you bitching about? Cops that interact with people every day, that already have camera's install on their cars and activate as soon as the lights are turned on, shouldn't have a problem having an extra set of eyes to prove they are in the right.
Other than your trolling half you can't say there aren't instances where cops frick up and get away with it because its their word vs a "tpos" viewed person.

There are also instances where things like letting someone out of a ticket would go away. There's a whole lot more of the ice berg below the surface.

as you know i used to do technology in a school.
we saved a dude from legit rape charges because mommy and daddy caught them fornicating and she said "he forced" me. we were able to pull a ton of video that showed them PDAing all over the HS and that their relationship didn't look coerced at all.
actually caught them doing the deed at school and it saved his rear.

clearly under covers wouldn't wear them outside of possible raids. It would be too easy of a give away if they wore them all the time. Plus swat should wear them to prove they followed protocol. I can understand not wanting to be filmed all the time and for every little thing so id be willing to say guide lines should be put in to where only incidents would be reviewed.

99% of the time anything involving a specialized unit is occurring, there is film rolling somewhere. It's not for the public. It's for closed hearings and thing of that nature.

Why would discretion be thrown out of the window? that's the first part of the police process.
