Might be going to see a USC Game. For one thread, can we keep the banter to a minimum. I want an honest response to this one. I don't care if you hate the Gamecocks, do you like the city?

It's like any city ... except with a lot of history.

The USC side of the city, and all along Main Street, etc., is nice. Like all cities though, there are a couple of areas to avoid.

We've got the same problems most large cities in the South have.

Nothing to write home about. Plenty of ghettos, but plenty of nice places with a lot of history.

Enter 5 points at your own risk.

It's ok. We preferred the charleston part of our trip more.

I spent an extended weekend there a few months back and I thought it was clean and safe. Don't remember seeing many places where you'd want to lock the doors driving through like here in Atlanta. Seemed to have a lot of cool restaurants and there's civil war history everywhere you look.

disclaimer: georgia got their fricking arse kicked when i went to columbia. everyone has both good and bad experiences with cities and my experience is just one example, so it is not to be taken as anything other than shitty anecdotal evidence.

anyways, i thought it was pretty damn below average. tailgating and pregame were both pretty solid, honestly. after the game, though, it took fricking forever to get to the bars because they are so far away. then we got to the bars and police officers came in and everyone just left (i assume it was the underage folks). that happened at 2 different places. just not a good bar scene really.

getting a cab was pretty shitty as well because they wouldnt let us in a cab that had other people in it. i dunno how normal that is for college towns, but in athens that is not at all the case.

the fans were also giant dickheads dumping beer and shite on us left and right. that just made everything exponentially worse. any good interactions were completely soured by the numerous pieces of shite we encountered.

No. A lot of people really shite on it, calling it the "armpit of the south," but I don't think it's as bad as all that. But, it's not great. That's not to say you won't have a great time, because you will.

I always enjoyed it. Our State House has a civil war era cannon ball lodged in it.

I went once and I won't be back. Took the alumni charter trip so we stayed at a nice hotel and all. The stadium being off campus hurts the atmosphere. The city itself wasn't very nice to me. Not much to really talk up. The fans weren't too bad but it didn't have an SEC feel to it.

Columbia reminded me of Jackson, and that's not a good thing.

its nicer than most sec capital cities and is getting nicer every year. The Vista is great at night w/ a ton of bars and great places to eat. the stadium is about 3/4 miles from there though. I would suggest you stay downtown near the vista and drive over to the stadium early to get decent parking where you can tailgate. Most of the nicer tailgating spots are reserved though.
