Every coach has their own strategy to win and overcome deficiencies. I don't think Saban is an elite or even excellent gameday coach. However, he overcomes this by being the best recruiter and program manager in the nation.

Spurrier is the opposite. Elite gameday coach, but lazy recruiter. Kind of like Petrino at Arkansas.

So I guess this is the debate. Do you have to be a combination of both to be considered truly great?

If Spurrier wasn't a lazy recruiter, would have won the SECCG at USCe or more NC's at UF? On the flip side, I don't think Saban could have built UF or USCe into what they've become under Spurrier.

It's an interesting debate

Think about when Saban and Tuberville were playing each other at LSU and Auburn respectively. Tub's thought (and probably still thinks) he was better than Saban and his players bought in. Gus has brought that belief back to Auburn and the end result was a very evenly matched Iron Bowl.

Just realized that when I hated LSU the most was while Satan was there.....*mindblown*

Yeah, I know, but it's not true that anyone can win here and at Bama.

I personally think Saban has some of the best coached defenses the SEC has ever seen so I can't fault him for that, but his offences are pathetic. He needs good coordinators for that.

Now, if you think the GOAT shouldn't need good coordinators then you probably feel Saban isn't that great.

I'm of the opinion that a modern college football team is closer to the NFL than anything and a good coach doesn't necessarily do everything for his team. He's got to be good at recruiting, delegating responsibility, and motivating. Saban has all of that.

I think the difference in respect that Saban gets vs. Calipari is interesting.

Could you guys imagine if Gus and Saban had the exact same talent to coach and then play a game against each other?

I would expect Gus's team to win by 2-3 TDs.

Spurrier vs Saban in the same scenario would be the same result. 2-3 TD win by OBC.

And you are probably right. But those coaches don't have the same amount of talent as Saban, which is no ones fault but their own. Recruiting is a huge part of being a college head coach. Saban emphasizes beating you with superior talent and depth. Spurrier and Malzahn emphasize playcalling. Both work and one is no less admirable than the other.

Saban's confirmation seems to have thrilled you. Understandable.

Coaches and teams that are intimidated by the Bama mystique will get destroyed but if you play Bama mano y mano you'll win every time. They're essentially bullies who crumble when someone stands up to them

I may have overstated but teams that aren't cowed by Saban typically do well.

Are you implying Alabama should never lose a game? You made it sound like every time bama plays a team with talent similar to theirs then they lose, when that's simply not the case.
Since Nick Saban has been Alabama's head coach, Alabama is 1-5 against top 10 teams at home.

All-time, top 10 vs top 10, Alabama is 35-39-1.

saban is a Jimmy Johnson clone. Jimmy Johnson himself said he was not a great gameday X's and O's guy. Their strength is finding talent. It's not easy, because of all of the talent, but get bama in a close game. saban will make questionable coaching decisions every time.

Started a thread on this a while back. I like Cal and this has always intrigued me

I think the prior NCAA infractions, coaching at Kentucky, and 1-n-dones will always give people fuel to dismiss Cal's actual coaching abilities. Outside of his travels from LSU to Miami to Bama and the associated controversy, Saban does not have the same amount of baggage Cal does

Spurrier really is starting to come across as pathetic. Saban has four NCs under his belt. Whether it be because of coaching or recruiting or global warming, that's four times more than the old arse ball coach has.

Spurrier is about five years, a pair of coke bottle glasses and a lisp away from being Lou Holtz.

Exactly. Everyone has their deficiencies. But, Saban works hard to make up for them.

What makes Saban so great is the recruiting and the "Process" that he gets everyone to lock into. That is all part of coaching.

No one is perfect. Saban isn't perfect. He is a great coach though. Why we pick at someone to find their one deficiency and then exploit it is beyond me. That is what people do with Miles and it isn't fair. He wins 80% of his games and has been really successful. He will always be compared to Saban, though, and that is the knock on him. Well, so what? Saban left LSU and Miles is still here. I'll take the guy who values you over the guy who doesn't.

As for Saban's problems, he loses a game now and then, but they are always to really good teams. Give the other teams credit too. They are not coached by imbeciles and those other teams want to win as well.

This thread is dumb and Spurrier's analysis of Saban seems kind of petty to me. I'll listen to Steve when has won 4 national championships.

And look, I am as big of Saban/Alabama hater as this board has seen, but let's be honest. He is a GREAT coach. My hatred is purely jealousy.

What is scary about Malzahn is I think he is an elite offensive playcaller and an excellent recruiter. He's going to win a lot of football games. Defense will be his kryptonite though just like the HUNH is Saban's weakness.

Spurrier is still pissed that he was never offered the Bama job....that and Saban has lapped him as the modern day GOAT.

Having said that, this is nothing new. Saban himself has always said is talent is in recruiting and his "Process" not and an X and O's genius

When Saban is unable to out-talent opponents, does he fall apart?

Won the SEC.CG beating a Florida team stacked with Coach Urban Meyer's star studded recruits when he only had 2 years of recruits of his own. His recruits were freshman and sophomores compared to CUMs who may have been even 5th year seniors. CUMs was led by a vet Heisman QB Tim Tebow compared to a 1st year starter and very inconsistent Greg McElroy. So yea obviously your point makes amazing sense.

Gus' 2nd half adjustments make me want to throw up

I'm giving him a pass for 2013 due to it being his 1st year as a BCS coach. However, he has to learn play 4 quarters on offense, defense, and special teams. I think he'll put his trust in his DC but he needs to recognize when to step in and make adjustments as the HC

I doubt that Saban and all of his rings really give a frick what Spurrier thinks of him.
