Muschamp: "I'll take talent over experience every time."

Is he right or wrong?
He said, "every time."
He said, "every time."

Well obviously he's wrong in the EVERY TIME part. Speaking in extremes is typically unwise.

Agreed. You can't really say "every time" but I would much rather have the team with the talent if I was coaching.
Posted on 7/15/14 at 11:47 am to scrooster
He should be striving for both.
I've found that definitives like "every time," "always," and "never" rarely apply.
Most coaches can prob think of a time when a player's experience beat talent; and another time when a player's talent was his defining asset.

Not that it's relevant to this thread but I get the idea that Boom is in the early stages of a major mental breakdown

The worst coach in the SEC.

We talkin' 'bout pressers. Pressers. NOt a game. Pressers.
Only on the rant could this be made into a big deal.

Why? His appearances, even after 4-8/GSU, have been well done. He's actually not bad in front of the mic and provides decent information.

Yeah..
Give me the incoming true freshman QB who is extremely talented over a returning 2-3 year starter at QB.
If the returning QB sucked, he would have never started 2-3 years.

I don't think anyone is making it a big deal.
That said, why wouldn't you interpret Muschamp's comments as being genuine, just because he's speaking in a press conference?

Eh, what kind of talent?
It's working for Calipari in Basketball, but he has the best of the best.
Florida has had "good" classes but not the "best of the best".
I think he's 1/2 right, the problem is in football if you lose a couple of games early that's your season, in basketball you can rebound in the Tourny.

I never said he wasn't genuine.
Talent over experience is probably the best policy.
Give me a brand new plumber that is really good at the job over a 30 year pro that can't glue pvc worth a shite.
Give me a true FR superstar WR over a 3 year starter that's a tad slow and has iffy hands.
Sure, now someone is going to say what about the 3 year starter than isn't so iffy with his hands and is almost as talented as the FR. We can go in circles all day on shite like this.
Carry on.

Can't agree. Talented frick-offs suck, waste time and scholarships, and give you bad press. Unless you're Auburn.

I absolutely agree.
I didn't understand your "he's speaking in a presser, not playing an actual game" comment, that's all.
Your examples are perfectly illustrative of how sometimes talent beats experience, and vice versa.

2010 - 1st in recruiting
2011 - 12th in recruiting
2012 - 4th in recruiting
2013 - 3rd in recruiting
2014 - 9th in recruting
247 numbers
That's all with a coach that quit, didn't quit, quit again, a first year coach picking up the pieces and 4-8
Good is a good term for our recruiting I suppose. Nothing great about it.

OK ladies, before you get your skirts all in a twist, he was specifically talking about the DEFENSIVE SECONDARY.
A place where, despite all the hate you can pour on, he is well known for being a great coach and churning out awesome players every place he's ever been.
I'll defer to his judgement on that one.

I really love how Tennessee fans more than anyone are rooting for Muschamp to be an utter disaster so that they can just maybe sneak out one win before UF is "good" again.
Unfortunately for UT fans, I think UF will actually be decent this year, in which case, UT is fricked. Again.

When Clowney was a freshman he was 2nd team behind 3* Melvin Ingram .... who had the experience and earned his way into a high 1st round draft pick.
What was UF's record vs lowly SCAR during that period of time? 1-2? Not sure it proves anything one way or the other except ... I think Muschamp was careless to so adamantly make the statement that he did.
Great coaches recruit'em and then coach'em-up.
Great recruiters do not always make great coaches.
I'm not sure I realized just how out-of-touch with the chemistry of the game Muschamp is until I heard him make the statement ... which immediately helped me to understand why the Gators mailed-it-in against Ga Southern.

You should probably include the context of the conversation.
He was talking about DBs specifically. He didn't say all positions.
By all means though, run with your agenda, whatever it is.

For example, he mentioned that he was concerned with the OL position past the top 7 because UF was really young.
He said that they were also very talented which was good, but the youth concerned him beyond our Top 7 on the OL.
SO obviously, he believes experience is important at some positions.
He also talked about how he was happy that he was going to be trotting out a QB with a lot of experience this year as a starter.
He only specifically mentioned preferring talent to experience in the SECONDARY.
