Robert Witt planned it that way.

I worked at a huge suburban ATL high school for 25+ years. Beginning around 2000, alabama recruited our kids heavily, the kids who could not get into UGA or GT. Those kids choices were Ga State or GA Southern or West GA or Clemson or alabama.

As for UGA, UF, and UTexas , it's much harder to get into these schools. I seriously do not know abou UTenn, but I'll say it's the same.

And most students would rather sacrifice the money for out of state , to attend a big name state university for all the social aspects.

They do. You just described Tech's entire student body.

It's also the kids who can't get the scholarship money to LSU, OU, Ole Miss, etc to make going to those schools worth it. Also LSU is probably a third of the distance Tech is from Houston. OU is maybe half the distance from Dallas. OU is closer to Houston than Tech is. I bet Arkansas is about the same from both. It's so far out there

26.5 million people in Texas , that's a lot of high school grads I assume each year. Texas only has 2 "big" univ. Not do dure tech would be considered big time by most

It took him a while to respond. I cropped out his name

So he didn't actually get a UA scholarship. He applied for and was awarded an endowed scholarship based on his writing ability.

True.
But we've got an obscene amount of smaller universities as well link.
But yeah, if you cant get into one of the two flagships, and aren't accepted at TCU, SMU, Baylor, Tech, and maybe UH, chances are good such a kid will opt for a big, out-of-state school, rather than a University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Ole Miss has a ton of out of state too for same reasons. Ole Miss was called the school for the rich and stupid when I was there too. The old slogan Ole Miss where the people are plastic but the Platinum cards are real.

It's a place where kids can go who are unable to gain admission elsewhere.
And it's a member of a large athletic conference.
A much more appealing option for many kids than would be their alternatives.

As opposed to the poor, stupid people that go LSU
