You can walk around with an AR on your back. People do it to be assholes though because most people get scared when they see this guy roaming the streets with a rifle on his back and call the cops. Then someone films it

I hate it when people go police-baiting so they can record it and put it on YouTube.
I carry a 1911 during the winter and a S&W Shield in warmer weather. I'd like to carry my 1911 all year round, but the Shield is smaller and lighter and feels better when I'm just wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

Essentially what the new law does is expand the rights of those having concealed carry licenses by authorizing the licensees to carry in places or under circumstances which were previously prohibited.
I think practically all of our Southern states have concealed carry laws and they are similar with many being reciprocal regarding the licensees. What you have seen in recent years are the various state legislatures, particularly in the South, considering and usually passing laws expanding the rights of the concealed carry licensee. And the concealed carry laws apply to handguns--there are few restrictions on long guns.
Having said that, with the exception of Western states, I do not believe most states permit open carry of handguns with very limited exceptions such as in your home or on your own property, etc. Arguably, last year, the legislature of my state passed a law permitting carrying of a handgun virtually everywhere without requiring a license, concealed or not; however, it has been the subject of much debate as of late and is still up in the air. LINK
Here's what I think is a good layperson's link to Georgia's weapons laws, keeping in mind that the new legislation changes it somewhat. LINK

So people can take their gun to church, but gays can't marry in them? Georgia needs to get with the times, man.

A good website for trying to figure out other states' laws is handgunlaw.us. They've got everything you need to stay legal while carrying. Looks like they haven't updated the site yet for Georgia, but that figures. They update pretty frequently.

Can you open carry with a hip holster in Georgia?
the carry law is just that...a carry law....doesn't matter if you conceal it or not...that is your choice...as long as you hold the permit to carry...

Man...I would be some uncomfortable if the bloke sitting next to me at a bar is carrying a gun whiling drinking up a storm.
And you don't think you've ever been sitting beside someone packing before? I'd almost guarantee that you have. Concealed actually means that with some people.
This law is fantastic. It isn't perfect, but the biggest thing wrong with it is that it needed to be passed at all.

Dear Parents
We wanted to reach out to you and give you some info regarding the individual that was at Fowler Park the last two days walking around with a knife and an exposed firearm in a holster on his hip.
We contacted the police and the Parks & Rec department. Unfortunately, there is no restriction on 'open carry' in Forsyth County. Furthermore, when questioned by Forsyth County Sheriff Office he did produce a Georgia permit. He is exercising his 2nd Amendment rights. These guys know the law very well and he was walking the line the entire time. IF he brandished the weapon, that is a chargeable offense.
Tonight, Wednesday April 23rd we have decided to cancel all training at Fowler Park only. We have reason to believe that this person may return in an effort to provoke confrontation with police. His plan is to use us through fear of an armed man to call the Sheriff and create a confrontation. The Sheriff has already investigated this particular individual and he has a license to carry a weapon so they are really at a disadvantage and fear a lawsuit for harassment.
Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of all our members, parents to players, and we are in the process of working with the county on additional patrols, hiring an off duty policeman as well as having a Park Ranger at Fowler. As of today we are not able to provide the off duty officer however we will plan on having one starting Thursday and over the weekend. We will keep the police officer at Fowler until we feel this issue has been resolved. We are waiting on a response from Parks & Red at this time to provide us with additional guidance on this sensitive issue and there may be further information regarding United FA training at Fowler.
Training at our other locations will go forward as planned. So sorry that on this beautiful day we have to cancel training however it’s for the safety of our players and their ability to focus on training that we make this very difficult decision to not train at Fowler.
Whoever wrote that is a paranoid schizophrenic and should not be in the position they are in. They are a far greater threat to those children than the person with a gun. Just wait until the letter writer believes that it is one of the kids that is targeting them in some grand conspiracy...

In GA, you don't have to have a carry license to carry a long gun. As long as you aren't prohibited from carrying at all and you must carry it openly.

I just don't get the big deal with the section about carrying in bars. Other states allow it already and people aren't dying left and right.
People watch too many movies.

That and the pathetic liberal media acting like this is the end of civilization in Georgia. They are absolutely ridiculous and the worst part is NBC is actually lying about what the law does. Not that it should surprise anyone as NBC has a rich history of fabricating news stories, but it is sad they stoop to that level and people actually believe them.

Oh I busted out laughing when I read it. And thought you are just giving the guy what he wants...attention.
