Kirby should've known he wouldn't have a d is bad arse as last year and could've gotten a legit hc job somewhere. Now his d couldn't stop jff or the triple/quadruple or whatever # option play book, which really weakens his resume of spectacular defense. Since saban isn't gone (yet), Kirby really has no choice other than go to the Mac/USA/sb conference or stay for another half decade. I honestly don't see any brighter future for Kirby than he could've had last year. What say you rant?

He'll probably be offered the A&M job when it all falls apart after Manziel leaves.

But I still think DC at Alabama is more prestigious than HC at A&M these days.

Maybe he is waiting for the right job.

You could be right. I don't think we've seen the last good Alabama defense of the Saban era, but his patience could've been his undoing if you're right. We'll see.

He should've left. That will always be seen as Saban's D.

The art of a successful troll is subtlety. This thread lacks it.

The guy makes a crap ton of money, will be in the running for a championship nearly every year and doesn't have to put up with the pressure that a head coach does.

What's stupid about that?

I believe Saban retires in ~5 years and Kirby takes over the reigns. It appears that's what he wants.

If anyone wants to know how Kirby smart will do as a HC look at Will Msuchamp is doing.

Same guy.

We'll see if he stays. Saban's "dynasty" is contingent on a great staff. Look what he did at LSU and where these coaches are now. WOW! But then again Tricky Nicky NEVER liked to stick around. If Saban bolts for Texas then Smart can take over at Ala. He may be better than Saban. He's just too young and high-strung for me. When they show him on the sidelines he's a heart-attack waiting to happen. Ahhhhhhh!

I'm sure the same argument was made about Gus when he didn't leave after 2010, but it worked just fine for him, as I'm sure it will for Kirby. Of course, I'm sure Kirby would rather skip the ArkySt. Level job, but that's probably what he needs before getting a big time job.

The two biggest things going against Smart right now are:

1. He has never been a Head Coach.
2. The trend the next few years will be to hire Offensive Minded Coaches.

I know there is an element of the bammer PTB, that will not allow bama to hire an assistant coach to replace Saban. No matter who they are.
The Talking Heads are already bring up the idea the kryptonite to Saban/Smarts Defense is the HUNH. With more and more teams switching to Gus's Offense, Smart will have to figure it out before someone will hire him as a big time HC. He could take a lesser HC job this year and prove he can coach offense also. It would be a big risk if he bombs.

Kirby has plenty of years left in his coaching career. I think he is making a very wise decision by sticking around with Saban to learn as much as he can about running a successful program. I think he is trying to soak up as much as he can so he can emulate Nick when he does decide to step out on his own. His patience may be rewarded greatly in the future.

No one can truly see the future but if Saban had moved on Smart might have stayed regardless. Kirby will likely end up with a good HC position if not at Bama when Saban retires/whatever, somewhere. I would think that Smart has learned more than just defense from Nick and he should be well prepared to apply Saban's system. Whether he has the same level of drive that Saban has remains to be seen.
