Let's Go Ahead And Get This Out of the Way

Since some alter will inevitably start a thread along the lines of "Why Didn't We Have Marshall at QB?" Or "Richt Misses on Another One"
No, the coaches did not screw up recruiting Nick Marshall as a CB. He would not be a good QB for us. He's good because he's not asked to do much through the air and Gus' system does a really good job of putting QB's in good situations. You put him in our offense and make him drop back and throw 20-25 times a game (conservatively) and you'd see he's a below average passer.

Not to mention Murray has proven a lot more then Marshall.

Same thing happened with Cam Newton. He wasn't a good fit for our offensive scheme, and it's not a good long-term strategy to plan your offense around one player unless you own an NFL team.

Cam would've been a successful QB at Georgia, Marshall probably wouldn't have been.

Maybe Cam could have been, but we run a pro-style offense that relies on play-action and our players are typically pass-first QBs. Cam was a duel-threat QB that relied heavily on his legs. Just didn't fit the system we run.
You have to admit that we've been pretty successful in the Richt era with QB recruiting. I trust them to pick guys who can throw the ball. If they didn't want Cam in our system, I have to imagine they had good reason for it.

Here at GA, we always make the best decisions. ALWAYS.

Do you think Nick Marshall would be a good qb in this system? Or is this just another instance where you'd rather shite on the staff?

Marshall would be about as good as Lemay, maybe better but I agree that he would struggle mightily running our offense.

No, I don't think he would be a better QB for us. I don't understand your second question since I stated that we ALWAYS make the right decisions. Jeeze man, when Im negative you disneys give me shite and when Im extrememly positive you give me shite still.

Your sarcasm was not subtle.

You tailor the system to fit the QB not the other way around. You don't exclude yourself from a talent like Newton just because he is fast. Seriously...saying guys like that don't fit our system is dumb.

No. No you do not. Holy frick I can't believe you typed that.

So you think we shouldnt recruit guys like Cam Newton because you percieve our offense can't function with a guy that can run behind center. How dumb can you be?
Just stop....you are acting foolish

Teams have built programs around a star player/QB the Atlanta Falcons sure did and Warren Sapp showed us exactly why that is a fallacy never to be revisited.
You should recruit players to run a particular offense or scheme of play. Cam Newton is the exception to the rule of thumb and anybody who could go back and see his incredible growth and potential would undoubtedly have recruited him with vigor.

Cam worked well in that system. He also works well in a pro style system. That should be obvious to anyone that's seen him play, he throws the ball well. He throws a much better ball than Shockley did and he worked out pretty well for us. You don't start on an NFL team for three years without some talent unless you play for Rex Ryan.

That we can agree on.

What's so hard about learning to handoff a dive on 3 and 15, throwing ineffective screens, not throwing to talented tight ends, etc.? Cam or Nick should have been able to pickup on that quite easily.

What made Cam an effective passer at Auburn was his ability to run the ball. Trying to contain his ability to run opened up receivers for him to pass to. He may have been pretty successful at UGA, but he ran the ball 264 times in his one year at Auburn. That's a lot. It's only 16 attempts less than he passed it.
With that said, you don't change your entire system in college to accommodate one player. It's too risky. Yeah, you can do that better in the NFL because you have (supposedly) the best players from college who can better transition to a new/different system, but even at that, it doesn't really change much. There is also flexibility in the NFL to trade players or draft to support someone who you have signed for an extended amount of time.
You don't have that in college. Look at Cam. As good as he was for Auburn, he was only there for one season. He already had the personnel and the system in place to help him succeed. What is Auburn to do if they have to completely revamp their entire offense for him and he's gone the next season? That sets them up for failure if they can't replace him with someone as effective. The best players don't usually play for 4 years even if they start their college careers with the same school where they end it. In the NFL, you can keep your star QB around for 10-20 years, but you can't do that in college, so you recruit for the long term, the scheme.
Teams don't recruit year-to-year. They recruit for 3, 4, and 5 years down the road because they need sustained success, and they recruit players that fit their game plans, not plan around their recruits. Changes will always be made after the fact, but you aren't talking about one player. You are talking about all the players on offense or defense that support that guy.

There are no words for that...
I hope you don't vote.

No. I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying you don't change your system based off one player. We would not have changed our system with Cam back there. We may have put in more plays where he was given more of an option but not redesigned our offense.
I feel like I keep having the same conversation with you and you prove over and over that you have no idea how football works at more than just the base level.
