I hate Nebraska but got to give Tom Osbourne credit it took iron balls to go for 2 vs Miami when he knew a tie would win the NC.
1960 Mizzou got screwed out of a NC. #1 going into the final game of the season vs kU. Jayhawks win but use an already ruled ineligible player though warned not to do so by the conference. kU is forced to forfeit but damage is done and MU goes on to win the Orange Bowl, finished 11-0.

Their 07 team was also handicapped by Willie Martinez.

This thread is focusing more on teams that got screwed out of opportunities to win it.
But the title simpley says best teams to not win it, which is why teams like 02 Miami and 11 LSU belong on the list.
Just because they lost the title game doesn't make them not great teams.
It's like when the undefeated Pats lost the SuperBowl, they are easily the best team to not win the SuperBowl and better than many teamst hat actually did.

1964 Arkansas won the national title.
1965 Arkansas would have been two straight though.
Arkansas won 22 straight games until the 65 Cotton Bowl.

By the end of the year we were pretty hot, but 07 is Richt's 3rd best team IMO.
2002 and 2012 were better.
One play away from a Natty. UGA would've killed ND.

Nobody disputes Arkansas 1964 claim, so no need to keep defending it.
However it's hard to argue against Alabama's claim, considering both the AP and Coaches poll voted them #1.
For older titles it's not uncommon for two (or sometimes 3) teams to all have legit or semi-legit claims.
That's one of the major reasons the Bowl Coalition/Alliance/BCS/College Football playoff progression has occured.
Since 1992 there have only been 2 "split" titles and given the new playoff there will pretty much never be one ever again.

66 Alabama. They started out #1 and never lost a game but somehow fell to #3 late in the season after Michigan State and Notre Dame tied.

1966 Bama was jipped for 3 major reasons
1. Pro northern bias
2. Anti-southern bias (alot due to the civil rights movement)
3. Bama fatigue (Alabama had won titles in 64 and 65 so they were looking for any viable alternative)
Bryant always said the 66 team was the best he ever had.
Oh well, they weren't the first undefeated team to get screwed and they weren't the last.
With the advent of the 4 team playoff any major undefeated program is always gonna get their shot on the field.

I understand; however, what's the point in including teams whom really weren't that great. One thing Alabama does right is that 9/10 minimum they blow out the cupcakes and beat bad or average teams convincingly. 2012 Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and LSU struggled against average and bad teams.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with the 41 claim to make up for it.

It is strange not to mention the undefeated 1908 squad for LSU
Probably the first great football season by a major Southern team after the civil war... they didn't get consideration as a result of that

1994 penn State is the best team that never played for a championship, I'll take them over 04 Auburn any day.
95 Florida and 05 usc are the 2 best teams that played for and lost a nc game

1984 Florida. Maybe the best UF team ever. BYU won the natty that year with a Holiday Bowl victory over 6-6 Michigan.
And people complain about the BCS.

It seems pretty ridiculous for a school to lay false claim to a national title from one year because they felt it was denied to them in another year.

Arkansas 06. Any other coach in the country would have won a natty with that team. fricking Nutt...
