Arkansas has a claim to the national title in '64 but it is a much weaker claim than Alabama.
Lol, so you openly admit that only 2 publications picked Alabama as national champions.
More than 20 picked Arkansas.

1966 UA and 2004 AU were undefeated and deserved the NC. 2011 LSU had the chance to win the NC but just wasnt good enough.
Not many teams can NOT win their division , let alone conf, and still play in the title game while having a worse résumé.

This team could have been great. They had all the talent in the world but we seemed to get in our way all year long.

Yeah I know its easier to talk about a more recent team than an older one but LSU 11 certainly is worthy of that honor. Beat 2 conference champions (Oregon and WVU), but away from Baton Rouge, won @ eventual champion 'Bama, and won the SEC.

Alabama was the third team in the BCS era not to win its division and get into the title game. Unlike the other two teams, however, Alabama managed to win the big game - and did so convincingly.

No, no they weren't. The badger was the best player in college football. He was the difference.

Maybe 04 AU. Cadillac and Ronnie Brown against USC would have been great.

Very true. I have big respect for what that LSU team did away from home. Won neutral site/away games vs. Bama, Georgia, West Virginia and Oregon

I'm going to vote 2003 USC and 2004 Auburn. LSU '11 makes a good case, but they got to play in the Championship game and underperformed. Auburn and USC never got a chance to make their statement, although their teams were extraordinarily good.

Miami 02
A far superior team to Ohio State but everything went wrong for them in the title game and it still took a very iffy call in OT for them to lose. If they play that game 10 times Miami wins at least 8 of them.
USC 05
Texas was plenty good but you get the feeling USC was probably slightly better and had a subpar game.

I don't give a shite about National Titles. It's a popularity contest and its out of the teams control.
Yeah what happened on January 9, 2012 was completely out of LSU's control.

But only one that actually counts: the FWAA. A bunch of random, minor publications gave Auburn their national title in '83 but everyone knows Miami has the most legitimate claim to the throne that year. Alabama was awarded the national title by the two that count for the most: AP and UPI.
But let's not kid ourselves about the FWAA in 1964. They were a panel of 5 sports writers who decided to give their trophy to Arkansas. Whereas more than 60 sports writers and 60 coaches awarded their national championship trophies to Alabama.

66 Alabama and 83 AU both got screwed hard. I'll go with the former because they were undefeated.

Concerning 64...we've been through this a million times.
Alabama got the AP and Coaches.
Arkansas got the FWAA.
Notre Dame got the NFF.
All are legitimate claims.

Nobody has mentioned the 1945 Alabama team that went undefeated and outscored they're opponents 430-80?
Sports writers were calling for a bowl game between Army and Alabama, but Army declined the invite so UA beat USC instead.
Granted, I'm not too worried about that one, given that the title went to the Cadets

F that. It's not like any of the Army players had anything to do with winning WW2.

Do you guys even KNOW what a co-champion is? It means you BOTH won that national title, stop bickering about something neither of you were alive for.

Neither belong on this list.
2007 Georgia:
lost to a 6-loss South Carolina team
needed overtime to beat a 6-loss Alabama team
lost by 3 touchdowns to Tennessee; score was TN 28 GA 0 at halftime.
narrowly avoided overtime versus 7-loss Vanderbilt
Their signature and only win of note was beating a respectable Florida Gators football team, that lost to 3 other teams.
2012 Georgia:
51-44 versus Tennessee at home
35-7 loss @ South Carolina
29-24 versus Kentucky; Kentucky lead for significant stretches.
Beat Florida 17-9 in very sloppily played game by both sides. Florida blew it. This is Georgia's only notable victory.
45-31 versus an overrated Nebraska. 45-31 pales in comparison to what Ohio State and Big 10 Champion Wisconsin did. Wisconsin blew a 17 point lead in the first meeting. Nebraska squeaked by Northwester, Michigan State, and Iowa.
