I said it was good for the STATE of Mississippi. By drawing positive attention to the state, no matter which school, could actually help all in state schools. There is no reason both State and Ole Miss cannot both be very successful. I guess I have a different perspective because I have not lived in MS since 1980 due to job transfers.

Truthfully, I wish that the media would stay as far away from Starkville as humanly possible.

That's interesting, because I haven't lived in Mississippi for most of my adult life and my perspective is completely the opposite of yours.

I don't think OM or State winning the CWS is all that good for the State of Mississippi, because I've observed that, outside of fans of the teams actually playing in, it nobody really gives a damn about the College World Series. You talk about "drawing positive attention to the state" as if there will be that much attention drawn to it in the first place.

How likely do you think it is that a random stranger in wherever you live could tell you who won the last College World Series? Now how likely do you think it is that he or she could tell you who won the last BCS championship?

Look, I'm happy for y'all, but you're deluding yourselves into thinking that this is some sort of significant milestone achievement in college athletics. It's about as significant as a natty in women's basketball or ice hockey. As far as college sports go in terms of national exposure, brand recognition, and revenue generation there's football, men's basketball, then everything else, and the everything else is way, way behind the other two.

So, no, I'm not cheering for State, nor am I cheering against State. I just don't give a shite.

It's a huge deal and our first real shot at a national championship. So your argument is completely invalid.

To whom? That's my point.

Just because it's a big deal to you doesn't mean it's a big deal in general.

How so? You've said and proven nothing. All you've done is say "nuh uh!" How about you actually give invalidating my argument a shot?

Again, if you'll recall, my argument was against some other guy's bogus argument that a CWS championship for State is somehow good for both OM and State because it's good for the state of Mississippi in general. I think that's hogwash and none of y'all have convinced me otherwise, especially not you, Taxman.

I respect all opinions. When I said good for state of MS I mostly was referring to kids in other parts of country seeing good baseball being played and it COULD benefit any school in MS, because with the tight money on number of baseball scholorships, State can't get all of them :-). This is a most interesting thread, I am excited about our chances, but am not losing any sleep over who pulls for us or not. Speaking personally, when any SEC team has been playing for a national championship I have wanted the SEC team to prevail, with one exception. I could not pull for Auburn in football the Cam Newton year...and I actually lived in Auburn then.

It is a big deal..if you lived here in Mississippi you'd understand. Every person in the entire state of Mississippi is talking about this, again if you lived here you'd know that.

I live in south MS and every single person that I have come across, whether they know me as a State fan or not, has brought up the happenings with this team. From the casual person who never watched sports to the most die hard OM fan, they are talking about this series, will be watching and rooting for State.

It's time ya'll got on board.

So it benefits State. It doesn't benefit the state, however.

Surely you can't be serious with this argument.

Dude, living in Mississippi is skewing your perspective. Just because it's a big deal in Mississippi doesn't mean it's a big deal period. I'll totally buy that, in Mississippi right now it's a big deal, but it's not as if the entire state was going apey over Arizona vs. South Carolina last year.

The only reason the CWS final is a big deal in Mississippi right now is because Mississippi State is in it. (And has nothing else to celebrate - do you think people in LA give a shite that UCLA is in it? Hell no.)

In the grand scheme of sports, the College World series isn't a big deal, and it's only a "big deal" right now in the state from which one of the teams hails. If you didn't live in Mississippi, you'd understand. The only people I've heard talking about the College World Series up here in DC are... wait for it... State grads. It just isn't a big deal outside of the fan bases of the schools playing for it.

I just looked it up. The TV ratings for the CWS are around a 1.0 - 1.2 on the Nielsen scale. That's about HALF of what the WOMEN'S FINAL FOUR gets. So about twice as many people care about WOMEN'S BASKETBALL than care about the College World Series. Hell, I would say that softball gets about as many viewers as college baseball does on ESPN.

Just food for thought. Again, just because it's a big deal to YOU and the people immediately around YOU doesn't make it a big deal.

So you admit it's a big deal to Mississippi. Cool, thanks.

Look I don't expect you to care at all or change your fan icon to MS State or go buy a cowbell, much less watch the series. As long as you aren't rooting against us I'm perfectly fine.

Yeah, sure. That's exactly my point.

That other guy tried to say that Ole Miss should cheer for State because it's good for the state of Mississippi due to the attention it brings. My point - which you now agree with - is that most of the attention Mississippi is getting is coming from within Mississippi, and that nationally the attention that the CWS brings is quite minimal.

So the argument that it's "good for Mississippi" is stupid. It's about as good for Mississippi as Alabama's softball championships are for the state of Alabama.
