Can anyone here truly see a light at the end of tennessee's tunnel (and be honest)? They have basically lost their grip of their historic recruiting grounds such as SC that has been sewn up by USCe & Clemson, Bama has now laid claim to the GA recruits that UT & AU used to get, & the NC recruits are getting picked off by everyone other than Tenn. Heck, even Vandy has started to lay claim to the few decent recruits in TN. Not to mention they are up to their eyeballs in debt. UT couldn't even take UL's coach who they evidently wanted bad enough to make a 2nd offer to after they had already been turned down once. I honestly wonder if we have seen the end of UT's ability to truly compete at the top of the SEC for the foreseeable future.

FTR, we never have him a chance to decline as he was never offered the job. We had discussions but couldn't come to terms on assistants. I know ole miss fans have been to that rodeo before with Cuttcliffe

This is a interesting question and tough to answer. IMO, Tennessee is one of those schools that needs an elite coach to be successful at the elite level. They cant do it on pure resources. Fulmer did a great job at Tennessee and deserves credit. Once Fulmer lost all his assistants he had trouble replacing them and the product severely diminished. Also think the fan base became stale with Fulmer and were ready for the change just to see something new. Therefor the support wasn't as strong.

I honestly cant blame Tennessee for getting rid of him. I would have given him a chance to rectify the problems but I understand why they did it. They fricked up royally though with the next hire and that did them in.

And Dooley is not as bad as a coach as his record at Tennessee indicates. He inherited a really messed up situation that was exasperated by bad luck with injuries.

Dooley is a good coach, just not a great recruiter. Granted recruiting is half the battle.

But i think this date also serves as a watershed moment for another program: the beginning of the rise of Vanderbilt's program, Ever since the programs have headed in complete opposite directions. We have reached levels that we couldn't dream of reaching in the 60 or so years before. I feel last year we pulled even with UT and this coming season with Coach Franklin's (best coach in the state) leadership, we will pull ahead for good.

But yet in some of UTs worst years....since 2006 UT has 47 wins. Vandy in some its best years only has 35 wins in that same span. This is since your "watershed" moment in 2005.

How was Bama in a worse situation that you guys are in right now? We were never $200 million in debt, and we were never isolated from decent recruiting territories. Our issues were due to sanctions and piss poor coaching hires (most of which stemmed from the sanction, except for Dubose which resulted in our sanctions). I wouldn't rank our stituation pre-Saban worse than your current situation by any stretch.

Now can making a coaching coaching hire like the one we made with Saban bring you out of your current troubles? It would probably help. But getting a Saban like hire will be far harder for you guys because of the debt & recruiting issues (just see Strong as an example).

Really? Let's compare the 5 years of Alabama football before Saban's arrival with the last 5 years of Tennessee football:

Alabama:

2002: 10-3
2003: 4-9
2004: 6-6
2005: 10-2
2006: 6-7

Overall record: 36-27

Tennessee:

2008: 5-7
2009: 7-6
2010: 6-7
2011: 5-7
2012: 5-7

Overall record: 28-34

Yeah...Alabama was most definitely worse off than Tennessee is just a few short years ago.

Your situation was worse. As far as recruiting, Alabama only turned out 5 more SEC players this year than Tennessee did. Tennessee talent is getting better every year. Tennessee may turn out more SEC players than Alabama next year. Truth.

There are no recruiting issues. Unbelievable new facilities, highest recruiting budget in the nation, improving in state talent and very close to Carolina and GA talent.

2002 10 3
2001 7 5
2000 3 8

The span I was speaking of was before that.(Alabama 2000-2004) You guys were on the downhill side by 2007.
