How can a media outlet with unlimited amount of resources and the biggest name brand for sports reporting be so horrible in analyzing recruits? Can't they just steal all the talent from everyone else?

I think they aren't as bad as everybody raves about, but I don't think they are the best, which they should be. And IDK why they aren't.

It's not a year round money maker for them. Hence the bad coverage

Because in the grand scheme of things college football recruiting doesn't bring as much money in, pretty simple.

Because they don't care about being right, they care about being entertaining. It's no different with anything else they cover.

They already took enough heat from the NCAA for the fiasco with trying to broadcast high school events on the Longhorn Network. It is not in ESPN's best interest to put themselves in a situation in which the NCAA could kick them out of every sport but football.

Yes they are. They'll write an article and have at least 5 things in there that isn't true anymore and hasn't been true in a couple of months.

But they have CFB coverage on lock, albeit Fox is coming on strong but they will never hold a candle to ESPN. They make so much money off of the final product, I can't see why they just don't reinvest into the vital part of the final product.

Just to play Devil's advocate here, but in what way do we determine that a particular website, such as ESPN, is "bad"? Are there comparisons out there about how certain five stars, etc. on each recruiting site and how they ultimately turned out?

ESPN only cares about the bottom line and has no problem pandering to whatever is going to draw ratings. Journalistic integrity is at the bottom of their priority list

They are horrendous at reporting recruiting news. I don't know about their rankings but I assume they would be just as bad.

Its simple
ESPN devotes a very , very small percentage of their resources to recruiting.
Rivals is ALL recruiting.

This may sound funny but I think try to spread it all out. In other word they don't think that the number 1 through number 5 safeties can all be from the same small section of the country. So they take what is prob the number 7 safety and rank him 2nd. They also bump up uncommitted guys for a chance at hits online and views of pc's.

Perhaps you aren't aware of this, but they did. ESPN hired the bulk of the scouting/eval staff away form Rivals when they made their big move and launched the whole RecruitingNation thing.
As a result, Rivals is far and away the shittiest rankings this year, it isn't even close. I would almost take Lemming's or Max Emfinger's (6 stars bitch!) over Rivals this year. Farrell has WAY too much influence on them and their rankings are a steaming pile.

I think you might be on to something there. Also, ESPN only has 11 five stars. By comparison Scout has 42, Rivals has 33, and 247 has 32. I think a lot of people want to look down on ESPN because their team doesn't have as many 5 stars (or even 4 stars) there as they do on other services.

Nah. 247 took all of Rivals good guys.

ESPN ha a local Louisiana tackle as a 4 star player and a top 100 player In the country
He got no major offers and ended up at Tulane. One of the many examples of their awful rankings

For the same reason Kraft Mac and Cheese isn't the highest quality you can get. It is one of many many things they do. The other guys ONLY do recruiting and thus they spend more time, energy, money and resources on it.

No to mention it Tre White wasn't even in their ESPN 300, despite being moved into the top 10 on 247 and top 20 on Rivals.
They also tend to elevate recruits that go to their postseason game.
