re: Tiger Tales: True Confessions, Brushes With Fame & Infamous Tiger Escapades!

It was the 4th of July and we had traveled to Orange County to visit my inlaws. My Father in Law insisted we have a picnic at the yacht club's spot on Catalina so we stocked up his boat and took the hour trip from the LBC to the lovely nature preserve known as Catalina Island.

The water was rough on the way out. But we saw a pilot whale and a school of dolphins. When we reached the cove and anchored amongst the other boats, we jumped into the frigid water, ran up and down the shoreline, took several hundred postcard-worthy photos and ran the dinghy around several coves.

We had settled in for lunch when two couples from the sailboat moored next to us came aboard. One was my father in law's colleague and his wife. The second couple was Dan Bane, the CEO of Trader Joe's, and his wife. Dan had some chips, a cold cut sandwich, remarked that they had just opened stores in St. Louis upon hearing where we were from and then went merrily on his way.

Nice guy. Better store.

This has been "Brushes with Greatness" with the808bass.

This thread has not had any action in over a month. I've been noticing several new Mizzou posters. This is the place to share the good stuff.

Alright, I'm a new poster!
Born in 1991 in Columbia Missouri. Been here ever since, minus 2 years, but I'm 100% true Tiger. I bleed black and gold. I left for 2 years after graduating Hickman HS in 2010 and went to school in Pittsburg KS at Pittsburg State. We all see how that ended up, I transferred back home to MIZZOU this past May. I couldn't stay away. Grew up going to games every year a Faurot and Hearnes (until 04 when the new arena opened). I've played drums for 13 years...yeah. That about sums me up. Glad to become a part of this board!

Hey guys, i'm a new poster too, figured I should jump in.

My relatives are from KC and Nebraska and I grew up a diehard MU, Chiefs and Royals fan (aka a glutton for punishment)

I grew up in the northwest (moving between Oregon and Boise,ID) but came to visit my family in Missouri every summer. After playing football and basketball in high school I went to William Jewell in Liberty, MO for two years to play ball.

After that I transferred to UGA where i am still a diehard Tiger (but do follow the dawgs as my second). Now I am a high school teacher and basketball coach in the Atlanta area. Hope that covers it!

Welcome GA!!! Love getting our numbers up here. What's your take on Mizzou and recruiting in the southeast? Being involved in coaching athletics, you may have some observations the rest of us don't get. Do you hear Mizzou being discussed at all? Just curious if your position would give you different insight into how effective the recruiting push has been in Georgia. Welcome again.

I do think I can offer a limited perspective on that. I definitely think Mizzou has become much more recognizable for kids here, they have joined in the discussion. It is difficult because there are so many schools trying to recruit here (surprisingly even several big ten schools) that is is highly competitive. But I think the efforts will start paying off soon. The billboards in Atlanta were a nice touch in my opinion.

I doubt we will ever sign any of the big time, top 15 level GA players but I do think we can consistently get several kids in this area. Schools like South Carolina do a great job of recruiting here and I think we can develop those types of relationships in the years to come. Not quite to their extent because of the distance but similar. There are so many D1 prospects here that many of the lower rated players turn out to be phenomenal college players because of the depth and competition.

Great input. Thanks. Yeah, the top 15 type kids will go to UGA, UF, Bama etc... Kind of like the top 15 types in Texas will always choose A&M, TU, LSU, OU or the like. I would hope we can make the same kind of in roads in GA that we have in TX though, finding that next level player and hopefully find a Spoon or Daniel in the mix. Thanks again.

Welcome! As a basketball coach, maybe you can answer this question. One of the reasons I've been given for the SEC not being as strong in basketball is that the best athletes in the south play football, not basketball. I'm sure this is true to an extent, but is this it? I can't imagine there aren't enough fantastic basketball prospects in the southern states to make for some great teams IF the SEC schools emphasized it. Your thoughts?

Yes it is true to a certain degree because everyone grows up here with football the only focus. Literally the second most popular sport might be spring football. But there are good athletes that play basketball down here and if you look at recruiting sites there are a good amount from this state that play major D1. I think the SEC has the potentially to be a good conference and has been in years past. You have Kentucky and Florida who are year in year out as good as anyone. Then that next tier is Mizzou, Arkansas, and many years Vanderbilt and Tennessee (a football school that still at times gets 20k fans for basketball games).

In my opinion many kids in this region go else where (ACC, or far from home) to play where basketball is more of an emphasis and more talked about. Also basketball recruiting as a whole is a much more national recruiting situation where kids often play far from home. So I think that fan support and hype plays a big role in it. But I see the SEC being much improved soon because there are 8 or 9 schools in the SEC i believe can be very good programs.

re: Tiger Tales: True Confessions, Brushes With Fame & Infamous Tiger Escapades!

Quick Tiger Tale of sorts. Son just brought home a stack of homework to be reviewed and signed by us. I was going through it, checking his grades, making sure he was getting his work done when I see an English paper he had to write. They had to do a parable and the title caught my attention. "The Tiger and the jayhawk". He went on to talk about all the misfortunes the jayhawk had because of his arrogance and when faced with adversity he would give up and quit. The Tiger, on the other hand, would fight and never give up and always eventually succeeded. At the end they had to write what the moral of the story was and it was "Always be a Tiger. Never be a jayhawk." The kicker of the story is that his English teacher...yepp...is a kU grad. Give her credit though, he still got an "A" on the paper. Not sure what I did, but did something right with the kid.

Brush With Fame last night.

Got picked to be on stage at the Penn and Teller Show and they did the Cell Fish trick with my phone. Got a cool video on the cell phone showing how they did part of it, so that was nice. Also, go to have my cell phone in a Tilapia.

It was pretty cool because I eat breakfast at the same place as Teller every Sunday, but I'd never actually seen the show. It was a good time.
