Josey was out about half of last season too, and our run game didn't suffer

I just feel better about an inexperienced line run blocking than pass blocking. Also our d should keep teams in check so we're going to want to run the ball even more, jmo

I mean I watched yall play a few times last year, just don't remember much about Gaines in particular. When you're a student and your Saturdays are spent on road trips or all day tailgating, there's only 2-3 Saturdays a year you really get to sit down and watch a lot of games. I try my best to watch highlights and read up on players, I just can't say I remember seeing him play.

really?

fwiw he was out 3 games.

In those 3 games:

Texas Tech: 166 yards (I'm not going to count Franklin's)

Kansas: 119 yards (again not counting Franklin)

UNC: 195 yards (no Franklin)

Lawrence only went over 100 yards once in that time. When Josey started he went over 100 yards in every game where he had over 10 carries other than Kansas St. and Texas.

oh i agree that we should do it but UGA simply hasn't been a downfield, power rushing team post knowshon and even in 2008 our OL was too soft to really call us that. i am totally with you about what we should do, but i think UGA is going to have to play to it's strengths which will be QB and WR IMO and have to go counter intuitive and pass to open up the run. even last year UGA essentially conceded this and GT/LSU are examples.

i feel like we see a lot of gun, spread formations like last year and institute a good amount of max protection with artie lynch and rs IV.

We are definitely going to miss Josey, as we did at the end of last season, but don't underestimate Kendial Lawrence. He filled in really well when Josey went down and the drop-off was not all that noticeable

I'm not. He is a good player but he is no Josey.

Would you not agree the team missed Josey's explosiveness?

Of course, he's a special back. I worry that he'll never be the same after that gruesome injury.

ETA: I realize UGA has some depth at RB, but how do you guys feel about the loss of Crow?

Everything I've read on Gaines is good. Can't say I've watched him play, but he seems like an All-SEC caliber guy to me. With the switch of Mitchell to corner, I would imagine our new number one guy is Tavarres King, who had a solid year last year and apparently a strong spring. We don't really have standout wideouts going into the year, but we have great depth at the position with 3 other quality guys who are great targets. Provided our O-Line can block for Murray, I don't think any one shutdown corner would be much of an issue.

Since y'all are sounding like more of a deep and talented receiving corp by committee rather than looking for any few individual standouts I guess we can just talk about the rest of those matchups in one fell swoop. Our other corner opposite Gaines is a senior Kip Edwards who has started a whole lot of games in his career, only knocked down 3 balls last year which sounds a bit alarming but Gaines emerged as our lockdown guy and I still like Edwards' experience, speed and ability. He's a Texas kid, don't remember his ranking but he was in that tier below Texas Longhorn recruits but kinda guy who did get offers from the ATMs and Texas Techs and Baylors and Oklahoma States. Good, experienced player.

Safety is an area where we are more muddled. We have a couple players coming back who each started four games last year - Braylon Webb started four then got knocked out with a knee injury, while Keronte Walker started the *final* four games of the year and that coincided with our five game winning streak for whatever that's worth. Matt White is another safety that has at times been hyped but a lot of Mizzou fans have been underwhelmed. One of the players at that spot who our coaches had great potential, Tavon Bolden, got kicked off the team. Bottom line with what you guys are describing as a more deep, spread it around group of WRs, this would be the area you would probably be wiser to try to exploit, as opposed to our starting cornerbacks both of whom I really feel are experienced and talented enough to be ready for what you throw out there.

Bottom line, to me this sounds like just one phase of the game where there will be some fascinating matchups and does not yet sound like the makings of a 48-7 beatdown for *either* side. but we can continue on looking at other areas of the field.

Not to be difficult but why do rushing yards from a QB not count as part of our rushing attack? there's no question he was our best runner with Josey out and I'm not sure why that counts against our run game. I guess if you are looking at it by position then fine, but in terms of what you have to worry about in our backfield, your defense has to account for Franklin runs just as much as anyone elses...

Frank the Tank
I hope his shoulder has recovered well so we can see more of this next year. Granted, I don't want to see our QB taking those kinds of hits frequently.

It definitely hurts. Our best returning RB has shown flashes of being good but is still an enigma. I think our rotation will be fine by the middle of the season but there's no way we'll be able to establish an efficient and effective pecking order by game 2.

They do, but I think the topic at hand was specifically your RB production. Murray is a pretty good runner in his own right but we don't ever mention him when discussing our run game.
