ecause it would be the symbol of Ole Miss athletics. Yeah the inflatable Hog is silly but we still have a classic running Hog logo that you see and immediately know what school it is. I don't see that when I look at a bear wearing a suit
It wont be our logo. the Ole Miss script has been our official logo since 03' and it will remain that. The bear is just an on the field mascot like your inflatable hog.

Would Colonel Reb be accepted back if he had a tent set up in The Grove giving out free chicken to fans?
LOL!!!! Oh, I'm sure some would STILL take him the wrong way!

You haven't had an on field mascot in years, why the need anyway?
just make a giant inflatable Ole Miss script suit and let a guy run around in it.

This is Ole Miss:
Not some bear or shark or some man in a gray suit.

The inflatable Hog isn't the only "cartoon" mascot we have...

I really could care less about col reb being on the field or not, I just hate losing the logo, and it will soon be gone forever. I used to draw it all the time when I was a kid, and my kids won't know what the hell it is

That and script logo will be the only logos my kids will know. I'm glad i have tons of Colonel Reb stuff to pass down.

I have been stocking up on items with the logo lately, but its such an inconvenience that we're having to do this in the first place

I agree. I just bought out the whole Ole Miss section in my store yesterday. Bought a bunch of Colonel Reb stickers for when I get new cars, etc.

Yeah, I'm an LSU guy- but I hate to see your tradition being torn apart. This PC bullshite needs to stay out of college football.
I remember the 1986 LSU-Ole Miss game in Baton Rouge. We lost to you guys, 21-19 when our kicker missed a chipshot FG with only seconds left. The post game celebration by the Ole Miss players & fans would be completely shocking to most of today's Ole Miss student body. There were rebel flags flying EVERYWHERE, and one of the Ole Miss players- WHO HAPPENED TO BE BLACK- was waving a giant one in the south end zone right in front of us that had been handed to him by a fan.
Nobody gave it a second thought; they were all happy to have won the game. My how things change....

Hell...James Meredith even thinks it's stupid to change the mascot.

I'll have to hand it to the Ole Miss posters on this board. Most are a lot more nonchalant or have a more postive attitude about the new mascot.
Because it is an absolute BITCHFEST on the other boards.

I wish after we choose from the three that we'd have one more vote.... do you want this to be your mascot or no mascot at all.
I know we spent a lot of money and time on this, but I really think everyone would be happy if nothing happened at all

Half of the SEC's schools mascots have less of a connection to their university or absolutely none at all. And the other half look like this....
To be fair, we had several live mascots at UF... and then he ate a few dogs...
Don't feel bad though Ole Miss. UF also didn't really even choose their mascot or colors. A pennant printer in Charlottesville, VA chose the mascot of UF.
The story (if you care)
quote:
It was 1908 when Austin Miller, a Gainesville native, was enrolled in law school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Austin’s father, Phillip Miller, had come up to visit his son and had decided to order some pennants and banners for sale in his store in Gainesville. The Millers went to the Michie Company, which was engaged in the manufacture of such items. It was here that they were shown samples of pennants that featured the Yale bulldog, the Princeton tiger and other school emblems. When the manager asked for Florida’s emblem, the Millers realized that the new school had none. Austin Miller said that the symbol of the alligator occurred to him because the alligator was native to the state of Florida and because he thought that no other school claimed the alligator as its symbol. The manager confirmed this, but admitted that he had never seen an alligator before and was unsure if he could design one. Austin set out to find a suitable picture and returned some time later with a photo that he had found in the University of Virginia library. Phillip Miller returned to Gainesville with an order of pennants and small banners. The pennants and banners had alligators in different poses with some lying down, some rampant, while other banners included only the alligator’s head. The Michie Company had supplied these along with a large blue banner… with an orange alligator in the center. By all accounts, this is the first appearance of the alligator as the University’s emblem.

I agree 100%. I wish they would do that.

See, I told y'all this wasn't going to be as "shitty" or "faggy" or "shitfaggy" as many of you or our detractors said it would be.
I hope they go with the land shark or the bear. Either will easily be the gayest mascots the SEC has ever known.

Well I dont mind sayin it.
As a Southerner in Louisiana the Ole Miss mascot change make my southern heritage feel violated period. I am agitated that any schools mascot would even come under the political correct microscope.

Oh no kidding. You are crucified if you are for or against the change from both sides. There will be different opinions among the fanbase. The whole fanbase isn't together and that is totally normal for something like this. I don't think they will ever agree on something like this.
